Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced his pick for VA Secretary, the final missing piece of his cabinet. Trump has picked David Shulkin, the current Under Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
If Shulkin is confirmed, he will be the first non-veteran to serve as VA Secretary. Shulkin has served as undersecretary since June 2015. He was previously was the chief executive of many hospital systems.

It might work. I’d rather get somebody OUTSIDE the “washington bureaucracy” to run it though.
Better still is to take all the money and give it to the vets as vouchers. let THEM spend it where they CHOOSE to spend it.
I am a vet. I don’t use veteran medical services.
That said, I have learned that many veterans use and are highly satisfied with VA services (from studies, and from several friends), but that some have awful problems with the system.
I am giving Trump the chance to get it fixed. He said he interviewed many people.
Trump probably feels this guy is most knowledgeable, and best qualified to get the job done.
He has appointed a Obama-appointed democrat to run the VA. If you don’t think CNN and MSNBC will use this to say this proves Obama knows what he’s doing you are wrong. Just a terrible pick and you’ll notice the vast majority on this board agree it’s a terrible pick, which means they agree with me, not you. I also speak from experience. I use the VA. I also used to work for the VA. I’ve seen the mismanagement up close and personal.
I concur. Trump knows exactly what he is doing and has to keep his word to maintain his credibility. Give it time.
The guy is a hospital administrator from the private sector. He knows and understands budgets, personnel and how private hospitals run. If you want to move away from a government run entity who better than someone who is a private sector admin who got to see the fustercluck going on in the VA?
Its a good choice. Trump knows what he is looking for.
...
I’ll repeat what you said to help counter the knee jerk responses.
Surprised and disappointed too, but Trump loves the vets.
I do not see these as Trump hanging them out to dry.
If this guy does not meet Trump’s expectations, look for him to be a short timer.
Trump may have picked him because of his knowledge of the system.
Wow! Ye of little faith. Trump has shown excellent judgement so far, this guy may be terrific. While rare, there are some excellent people that come out of the government system.... (and by the way, I was never a Trumpster.)
This guy was nominated amid reports of terrible problems in the VA and approved by a Republican Senate.
He’s clearly qualified, and at the very least a reasonable choice.
Yes, I use the VA.
Drivelous Bull crap
Your opinion is just crap
The Dems would have a cow..................
The problem is The American Legion, The VFW, and Amvets oppose the dissolution of the VA system.
The American Legion is the reason for the creation of the Department of Veteran Affairs. They are fighting privatization because of thier reverence to history.
The problem is the VA has become a bloated bureaucracy. A dumping ground for political appointees and government workers I’m not sure it could ever be cleaned up.
The system, like any big system, there are good places and bad places, good people and bad people. It’s a case by case basis as to who is to be fired..................
I trust Trump to make good picks. I will wait and see how this works out instead of immediately going over the top drama queen on his choice like some appear to have done.
LOL! He knows what he's doing and will get his agenda followed by them. What's with all those who jump at every opportunity to express their "concerns" about Trump?
They are the real disappointments, especially the ones who don't seem to
They are usually referred to as "concern trolls".
From the nominee’s background it appears to me that lots of vets are going to be going to private doctors.
I would hold back judgment on this guy for a while. Trump’s picks for staff seem to be awfully good.
“If you dont think CNN and MSNBC will use this to say this proves Obama knows what hes doing you are wrong. Just a terrible pick and youll notice the vast majority on this board agree its a terrible pick, which means they agree with me, not you. I also speak from experience. I use the VA. I don’t care what the MSM will say. It is immaterial to the situation. As far as what others think, I don’t much care about them either. For the most part, it’s “veterans” who don’t like it because the guy isn’t a vet. Lastly, it is telling that you are a former VA employee. You are willing to overlook the fact that the VA is a disgrace and that someone with the experience to manage it has been chosen. This isn’t about whether or not this guy is a conservative, it’s whether or not he has the ability to fix the VA. Personally, I hope he and Trump together close it.
I would add that if you don’t look like or work like a private sector health administrator you are probably gone.
The rate of appointments for VA docs is just 40% of the private sector. That will change.
Don't know the guy yet so can't judge him, but who could fix anything under an idiot like Obama? Plus no second or third string guy ever has power. And before criticism, my son is a disabled vet so I care deeply.
Probably this guy had his hands tied under Obama. I believe Trump wants to do what is right for our Vets. Give him a chance under Trump’s supervision. We need to get the VA out of the hands of the federal government.
