Majority back ban on handguns in checked baggage
YouGov Polls ^ | 10 January 2017 | YouGov Poll

Posted on 01/10/2017 3:09:49 PM PST by backwoods-engineer

Most Americans, including half of independents and Republicans, support a ban on checking handguns into aircraft baggage

In recent years, America has, unfortunately, become used to mass shootings, but the recent mass shooting by an Iraq War veteran in Fort Lauderdale has sparked some concern. In the shooting at the Florida city's airport, the man, Estaban Santiago, had checked a handgun into his baggage. After retrieving it from the carousel he loaded it in a bathroom and then allegedly murdered five people, exposing a weakness in airport security.

The latest research from YouGov finds that most Americans (57%) support a ban on checking handguns into luggage, while only 26% oppose a ban. Support for a ban is strongest among Democrats (72%) but even 49% of independents and Republicans support the measure.

The partisan divide on the issue of handguns on planes is markedly smaller than the divide when it comes to general laws on the sale of handguns. While 73% of Democrats want it to be harder to buy a handgun, only 32% of Republicans agree.

This is bull crap! This means that anyone wanting to transfer a weapon must do so by UPS or FedEx. Good luck if going to Africa to blast some animals.

I think this is a debatable question. Personally I’m not in favor of having a number of permit-holders carrying on board. Perhaps that is the perfect solution and prevents anyone from trying anything after that. On the other hand, I’m not comfortable with the idea of an errant shot compromising the aircraft.

In just about any other location, I’m all for concealed carry.

>>They’ll try their best to flip the tables on us as “racist”, “bigoted”, & “hateful” to get their agenda thru.

They are doing that right now. Being afraid of what your enemy will call you is not a good strategy for victory.

it’s a meaningless response. Anyone could walk into the baggage claim with a gun and shoot people. You don’t have to just be coming off a plane.

The problem is that airports mezzanines and property are now just additional target-rich areas without personal defensive precautions allowed.

In recent years, America has, unfortunately, become used to mass shootings,

An assertion without a shred of evidence. I'm certainly not 'used' to the insane and the criminal and the Islamic (possibly redundant).

The implication that additional gun restrictions would prevent violence is the same old same old.

We don't let prisoners walk the streets. We build prisons for them.

Liberal do-gooders demanded the closure of compulsory custodial facilities for the mentally ill, so the mentally ill walk the streets and commit violence.

A rational person transporting his firearm has nothing to do with so-called mass shootings.

You are right.

This MUSLIM loaded his gun in a restroom after retrieving it from baggage claim.

Thus my ‘smart’ remarks.

Hope I didn’t miss rbg81’s point, but I agree with you entropy12.

I’m comfortable with things as they are, so luggage should be okay for weapons in the cargo hold, since anyone can enter the luggage claim area with concealed carry.

Prior to the checkpoints on the other end, I don’t think things need to change. I could be persuaded that anyone entering a terminal building should have to be checked first.

That isn’t a top priority for me now. I suppose it could become one. After an incident on the other end, perhaps that could too, and that would compromise the inclusion of guns in luggage.

“In just about any other location, I’m all for concealed carry.”.....

how about a compromise? I’ll check my weapon at the aircraft door and get it back as I leave the plane.

If it is addressing carried on luggage, then I’d have to say no.

It is illegal to have firearms in carry on luggage........Ask Barry Switzer and Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham.

“All it takes is for one guy to shoot out a window. The end.”

Hahahahah!

No.

Only in Hollywood.

In reality the window, with a small hole in it, will make a loud whistling sound, the masks will drop down, and the plane will decend to a safe altitude. Big freaking deal.

I would like to see a lot more people able to carry.

It would depend on the regulations associated with the new direction on concealed carry.

Would the laws be relaxed so it would be easier to get a permit?

Would it turn problematic as terrorists who didn’t have a record obtained one for bad purposes?

In general, I think that’s a reasoned question. I’m not sure how it would work in practical terms if 30 people had permits on a flight.

I’m also not sure if one bad player walked up with a gun to the plane and took a hostage and started making demands.

Sadly, the way things are now with terrorism, I would as well go along with metal detectors for entering all crowded areas such as airports, malls, court buildings etc.

What BS. Stupid poll and stupid responses. Guns are checked. I do it all the time, most of the time no big deal. Don’t see guns again until I leave the airport.

The immediate emphasis would seem to be a punk-detector.

Maybe it’s coming to the place where everyone arrested would need to get a small implant that could be used to screen them from entering public places.
