You'll Never Guess How Many Guns the Average Gun Owner Has
The Motley Fool ^ | January 9th, 2017 | Rich Smith

We Americans love our guns -- and apparently, we love them twice as much as we used to.

We first twigged to this trend in 2015, when an astounding story on The Washington Post's Wonkblog site revealed that the average number of firearms owned by a "typical gun-owning household" had roughly doubled between 1994 and 2013, to 8.1 guns per household. The trend has only gone up since.

How do we know this? A recent Harvard/Northwestern University joint study estimates that America's 319 million citizens own about 265 million guns today. And although from 1994 to 2016 the number of Americans who own guns decreased from 25% to 22% -- and has in fact been declining over the past 20 years -- FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System data show that gun sales set new records for the past 18 straight months through November.

Translation: Fewer households owning guns, but more absolute gun sales, equals an increase in the number of guns owned per gun-owning household.

First, I think the number of guns at 265 million is low, especially based on background checks in the past 8 years, not to mention spikes that took place when Clinton entered office and after 9/11. Secondly, a recent study indicated that gun ownership had increased, and we all know this only covers those that admit to it. My theory is that these researchers understated both gun ownership and the number of guns, resulting in more guns per individual if you accept a constant number of guns. I leave it up to you to determine their intent other than to brand gun owners as crazies. In reality, I would simply say there are more guns and owners than could ever be purged, and I consider that a major strength of America.

I’m not afraid for the government to know that I don’t own any firearms.

Lots of women own just one gun. Probably the majority of women gun owners own just one. I know many women who carry and have a gun, but none who have more.

It’s we men who have to have an arsenal.

I used to.....but then there was that time I tried to carry them all across the lake in the boat.........

Don’t even let it be known how many gun safes you own. Some are bragging on that. Don’t, just don’t.

Fake news alert!

This crap was written by left-wing media based on a "university" study.

Designed to tell the serfs that most of the guns are in the hands of just a few "gun nuts". So confiscation will not be much of a problem...

If it’s just 8.1, it looks like I’m pretty average.

Thankfully my Brother has a Masters and is closing on his PhD in Gun Ownership.

Maybe even 8.3. I have crispy shotgun that I consider only .3 of a gun. It’s real bad. It’s actually my wife’s but I did buy it so it’s on me.

Some serious concern about that one. I have 3 daughters that don’t give a rip about the ranch or my collection.

I need different types if guns for different types of scenarios, none of which have to do with hunting animals. I would only shoot an animal in dire self-defense, which I have never once had ecen come close to however the odds it might one day happen are increasing because we have more and more thugs in my area who go around with pit bulls that they cannot control. For example, one idiot who thought he was rapster king recently lost control of three pit bulls the fool was walking so the dogs could shit big huge turds on other peoples drive ways, two of the pit bulls started to viciously attack the smaller third onel then turned on rapster king himself and tried to chew his face but some guy comes running with a baseball bat and then beats the pit bulls and next police had to come and so on.

Basically, because I love animals, my guns are only for shooting bad humans. But there are different scenarios. For example, the big earthquake hits my area of California and un the mayhem there are no cops to “keep the peace” requures one type of “protection”, a home invasion requires another type, overthrow of an unconstitutional tyranny calls for a third type and combinations of stealth as well as heavy duty, and so on.
