Skip to comments. You'll Never Guess How Many Guns the Average Gun Owner Has

We Americans love our guns -- and apparently, we love them twice as much as we used to.
We first twigged to this trend in 2015, when an astounding story on The Washington Post's Wonkblog site revealed that the average number of firearms owned by a "typical gun-owning household" had roughly doubled between 1994 and 2013, to 8.1 guns per household. The trend has only gone up since.
How do we know this? A recent Harvard/Northwestern University joint study estimates that America's 319 million citizens own about 265 million guns today. And although from 1994 to 2016 the number of Americans who own guns decreased from 25% to 22% -- and has in fact been declining over the past 20 years -- FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System data show that gun sales set new records for the past 18 straight months through November.
Translation: Fewer households owning guns, but more absolute gun sales, equals an increase in the number of guns owned per gun-owning household.

These geniuses are slow! Where they been since 2008? Oh yeah, hanging out with the rest of the pajama boys at the DNC.
When you have to sit down and do an inventory, you may have enough guns.Or not.....
Exactly. They said they noticed a drop in the number of males owning guns. I wonder why. LOL.
Only 8.1 guns per owner? Hmmm....seems a little light.
I have probably 15 powder burners and about the same number of airguns. There are huge gaps in my gun needs.
Still, I can remember when Daddy only had a .22 Remington model 513, a Single barrel Essex shotgun and a WWII trophy Luger. He did buy a Browning Auto 5 around 1958 but had sold the Luger by then.
“If two is one, and one is none ”
I don’t know of anybody that owns just one gun. Still, I give the study a little more credit than you do. But in the end I think it’s just an educated guess more than a “study”.
Anyone divulging what they own is asking for trouble.
I advise folks not to talk about their weapons at all. Don’t talk about ammo or any devices you may own.
‘scuse me, but I will never click on a site that is named fool.com HA!
Maybe that's per room.
Maybe you are just above average.
“Only 8.1 guns per owner? Hmmm....seems a little light.”
Yeah, I think it’s 8.2.
Some. Several. A number.
Who wants to know?
I live in Arizona ... I would never have an “evil” gun
And how many are private sales?
I hope 3d printing goes big time soon.
I better get busy upping mine.
Can I count my crossbow? It will go through someone.
Tell a doctor you have guns and it’s entered into a federal database - I suspect that MANY gun owners are quiet about their hardware when some snowflake calls them and asks.
