President-elect Donald Trump plans to pick former Indiana Sen. Dan Coats to head the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, overseeing 17 intelligence agencies, according to a transition official.

If he is confirmed by the Senate, Coats would face a daunting task as the bridge between Trump and the intelligence community. Trump has begun openly feuding with intelligence agencies over their conclusion that Russia hacked into Democratic computers to influence the election.

Coats recently concluded a term in the Senate, after also serving there from 1989 through 1999. He has also served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany.

Coats, who served on the Senate intelligence committee, may also face a challenge in reconciling his own hawkish views on Russia with Trump’s far friendlier posture toward President Vladimir Putin,

I would prefer a more outside the box guy, but it depends on what his charge is. If Trump tells him to completely revamp these agencies, as is rumored, fine.

I don’t know anything about Coats.

Why don’t you like him to get this position?

Perhaps Coats will prove to be TRUMP’s foil. TRUMP is eager start fresh and deal Putin a respectful, friendly and diplomatic opening, openly desirous of an effort to attempt to cut deals, rather than boss Putin around on his first stroke, and to openly seek cooperation with Russia in annihilating ISIS in the ME.

However, when Coats brings an inevitable piece of trouble by the hammer and sickle, Trump can then defer to him and the
Dept of Intelligence if he needs to, on our proper response or reaction, but Trump himself can continue with the hard won diplomatic avenues he hopes to keep established, or not, as he sees fit.

How old is he? 65? We need someone who has a reputation to maintain rather than someone who has enough money to rest on his laurels.
