I would prefer a more outside the box guy, but it depends on what his charge is. If Trump tells him to completely revamp these agencies, as is rumored, fine.

Perhaps Coats will prove to be TRUMP’s foil. TRUMP is eager start fresh and deal Putin a respectful, friendly and diplomatic opening, openly desirous of an effort to attempt to cut deals, rather than boss Putin around on his first stroke, and to openly seek cooperation with Russia in annihilating ISIS in the ME.

However, when Coats brings an inevitable piece of trouble by the hammer and sickle, Trump can then defer to him and the
Dept of Intelligence if he needs to, on our proper response or reaction, but Trump himself can continue with the hard won diplomatic avenues he hopes to keep established, or not, as he sees fit.
