Trump picks former Sen. Coats as Director of National Intelligence

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday picked former Indiana Senator Dan Coats as director of national intelligence, two sources briefed on the decision told Fox News.

The official announcement is expected later this week, according to the AP, as Trump makes final decisions on some of the major positions he needs to fill before he is sworn in on Jan. 20.

Coats, a Republican, served as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee before retiring from Congress last year. He also served as U.S. ambassador to Germany.

As director of national intelligence, Coats would oversee an office created after 9/11 to improve coordination of U.S. spy and law enforcement agencies.

Coats is very much beloved in the Senate, a source told Fox News, and is considered to be an interesting balance to some of the other personalities such as Gen. Michael Flynn and Rep. Mike Pompeo.

The senator was banned from visiting Russia back in late 2014 for his participation to punish Russia because of Moscow’s move to annex the Crimea region of Ukraine, which he seemed to enjoy at the time.

“While I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to go on vacation with my family in Siberia this summer, I am honored to be on this list,” he said after Russia’s announcement, according to The Indy Star.

The choice comes amid Trump's questioning of the U.S. intelligence community's assessments that Russia interfered with the election on his behalf, and one day before the president-elect is briefed by senior intelligence officials on the Russian hacking allegations.

That’s what worried me -Trump compromising is ok as long as we have Trump watching over things. He can change his mind if need be. But being stuck with Pence post Trump has me unhappy with any permanent change Trump will be trying to make. Pence can undo it, just like Bush did.

Not sure - I guess we’ll have to take it with the grain of salt where he has a boss and will either do his boss’s bidding or be replaced.

What is a GOP-led senate hosting hostile committees for?

Yeah, that sentence didn’t seem to make much sense to me either. Some pretty serious subject/verb/object confusion there...

Odd, the media didn't mention this, it doesn't go along with their story that rump is a Russian spy.

Well said. What caught my eye too was he’s very well liked in the Senate. Its the only place he’s well liked. Certainly not here in IN! I’ve written him many nasty emails!!! He is a Liberal hack masked as a Republican. BIG MISTAKE!!! Saying he can be open-minded on the hacking when Russia is said to be involved is a JOKE!! My two cents coming from a Hoosier of many years.

I find his caustic wit to be very refreshing. :)

Take it elswhere. That Coats has a lower profile than your lawn mower is a fact, not a smear.

Why else would there be so many inquiries about who, or what he is? Some never even heard of him. (And a few are from Indiana. Ha!)
Sheesh.
