"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!" Trump said on Twitter...

It’s a mindset problem as much as an economic problem.
International trade per se is not a fundamentally evil thing. But if it is not balanced over time, then the party that produced more goods to participate in the trade will end up accumulating debt notes on the other party. This isn’t good.

Carrots and sticks to bring about balanced trade are not the same as isolationism. “Neither a borrower nor lender be.”

Trump usually has his facts straight.
GM will yuuugely benefit from the lowering of the corporate tax rate that Trump will get passed.
And since we bailed them out and the US took a loss on the stock price when we sold (thanks,Jack Lew!), GM can return the favor.
It would not kill them.

This is also perhaps the first move in his deal dynamic.
It’s a notice to Mexico among other things. If we actually have balanced trade with Mexico, then the tax could be mitigated or even eliminated.

There is no Constitutional right for "Free Trade" with other countries. None what so ever, actually the opposite is true. The US Constitution provides for duties and levies on
foreign trade.
But I've told you this a million times.

It’s trying to override actual constitutional mores with one-world, globalism mores.

Speaking of a notice to Mexico, FoxNews actually quoted that $2.4 billion was sent to Mexico in remittances in the month of December.
A 10% tax on all remittances to foreign lands would pay for the Wall in three years or so.

In this case Trump could be (and probably will be) gracious about it and say he’s glad it’s that way, and hopes it keeps on being that way.

ALL Chevy's should be made in the USA. ALL OF THEM. Or subject to a duty.
If they(Chevys) are in fact being exported from Mexico to other countries, not the USA, then whats all the fuss about? They will not be subject to a duty. Right?

That is true... we need to understand the bounds of what we can police. We can police our borders. Mexico’s borders with somebody else, that is for those two entities to wrangle out however they choose.

The Cruze vehicles Trump complained about are made in Lordstown OH. Last time I checked, Lordstown was part of the US.
To: who knows what evil?
It’s virtually inevitable with the firehose of information that Donald has to deal with. The point is that the tweet isn’t even an EO. It might be wrong sometimes. This is easily recovered from.

Trump didn’t goof. A standing tariff will remind GM hacks that they can’t accidentally ship some cars north by “mistake”.
