I stopped in there for batteries once in the past 10 years. They tried to sell me a smartphone even though I already had one.
The 1970s was the best time for Radio Shack. I used to buy shortwave radios there! And Heath kits. I was such a 1970s nerd.
Radio shack is still the only place to get basic electrical components.
Radio Shack was great back in the 1970’s but while everyone else moved on from the 1970’s, Radio Shack stayed in the 1970’s.
If ever I walk into a Radio Shack now, I expect to see a TRS-80.
My local Radio Shack recently closed and I miss it. As for the other mall stores, kids don’t have the discretionary income to hang out in the mall and buy, buy, buy like kids did in the past. Everyone is so squeezed financially.
Yea Radio Shack, bought all the parts I needed to build a guitar amplifier from a schematic in 1977. I learned so much doing that one summer. Those days are gone
Remember Tandy?

Bet you still have a “Powerhouse-5” flashlight.
Awesome times...I have several pieces of Heath kit gear from my Dad's Ham days....he used to threaten to kill me if I ever touched any of it. They're in boxes in my attic - untouched for 40 years...;-)
I’m glad to hear that Radio Shack is still around.
You’ll love this then:

I still have a shortwave radio that I purchased at RS years ago...works just fine.
My first computer was a TRS-80 (16K) Color Computer. With a Videotex ROM cartridge, 300 baud manual modem, and a Compuserve trial.
It was the coolest thing...
And - Megawars! My First on-line, character based graphic, interactive game.
And bowing out of lab time at college and going home to do my computer lab work, was awesome.
Those were the days. (For me)
Remember the Heathkit GC-1000 Most Accurate Clock?

Nowadays available for ~$10.
I don't know why they moved away from stuff like that. They should have taken a home depot approach to educating consumers on electronics. And they should have moved into rebotic kits. They have a couple but it's weak.
They look like everybody else now. And I don't see how they will survive being just like everybody else.
Still am a nerd and will be looking for Heath-type kids as I need to get back into ham radio. I loved Radio Shack and Sterling Electonics. Gads. That was a time ago!!
Radio Shack is no longer an independent company but a brand of General Wireless.
Radio Shack went bankrupt in 2015. The assets were purchased by General Wireless who kept open the stores not closed during the bankruptcy. They also sublet space to Sprint for their branks: Sprint , Virgin and Boost Mobile, a store within a store.
