Eaten by Amazon. Stores with relatively undistinguished wares and store presence can’t stand up to web-based competition featuring substantially identical items.
I stopped in there for batteries once in the past 10 years. They tried to sell me a smartphone even though I already had one.
The 1970s was the best time for Radio Shack. I used to buy shortwave radios there! And Heath kits. I was such a 1970s nerd.
“The US has 23.5 square feet of retail space per person....”
That might be the problem.
Then there is Amazon.
And Costco stores do not seem to be closing.
Trump’s fault..
My favorite places to are eBay and Chewy’s
eBay offers free shipping and delivery is usually fast.
Chewy is where I buy pet food - if I spend $49, I get free shipping and two day delivery.
I no longer shop in the mall when I can have anything I want delivered to my doorstep.
No more getting in a car and trying to find parking at the mall.
And the economic dislocations job losses etc will be blamed on Trump. Its how liberal media types roll.
Even though long term problems are coming to a head, the fact that the closings will happen with Trump as president will cause the media to report these as a reaction to Trump.
The fact that some malls are losing customers due to feral youth raising hell as a factor here, will be ignored.
Heck the media may even rediscover that we have a homelessness problem in this country. They can only report on certain subjects when a republican is president.
I was disappointed to see that a Dunham’s sporting goods store here in town closed recently.
I bought a lot of stuff there, guns and ammo.
Obama wants his legacy? Here it is. Failure.
Cheering on the demise of Target. Let’s hope that their earnings fall way short during this holiday season and they go out of business.
I saw a man in DSW shoes the other night, trying on shoes, and taking smartphone photos of model-price tags.
The parking lot at “Fry’s” electronics used to be packed, but on a recent trip it was one third filled.
Old Navy in my area consolidated three locations into one.
We are a “built out” town of 200,000 in a metro area of millions.
The trend is to remodel shopping centers, including new major tenants. Even then, some businesses fail.
Those closures then have an impact on truckers, and it cascades down the line.
Malls are used as bus stations and as a place to hang out.
Have you seen the ugly fashions these stores featured the past few seasons that cost an arm and a leg? The stylists must be women haters. When normality reigns in fashion and price, customers will buy the product.
PC has also been the demise of many.
How is this playing out in terms of mall vs. non-mall stores? I have come to despise going to malls. None of the malls I occasionally visit have a serious urban wildlife problem, but they tend to be crowded, parking is distant, and one is forced to wander a maze of stores to get to the one I want to shop. The basic design caters to folks who think shopping is entertainment. That’s not me.
Walmart opened a new store for almost every one they closed. I know nothing of the other brands listed.
I have been picking up “CVS type” items at my grocery store and finding the prices not so bad. Plus, my CVS is kind of dumpy with narrow aisles and understaffed pharmacy. I may move my prescriptions to the grocery store.
The one I wonder about is Staples. Their prices have skyrocketed in the last two years and I’ve taken to getting my office supplies online. It is amazing what a few minutes of searching can yield. I wanted a certain office chair and got it at some online retailer for 25% less than Staples with free shipping. The Staples website was helpful in providing the model number, though! I did go to Staples for a certain item a few weeks ago and the store was empty.
...Men’s Wearhouse... Has been in decline since the board forced out the owner and spokesman, George Zimmerman. “I guarantee it.”
More than that. Now that a certain segment of the population uses malls as a place to act out their feral instincts, the productive people will stop going to the mall. Big stores will close, one after another.
All because the politicians refuse to admit what is happening with the individuals who are in a specially-privileged class and are immune to prosecution.
Where will happen to the shoplifters and gender neutral bathrooms?
