Jerome Kern, a songwriter of the Great American Songbook, along with lyricist Dorothy Fields, wrote this tune for the musical Roberta, which was turned into a movie in 1935 with Irene Dunne singing this heartbreaker.
Producer Buck Ram slowed it down but kept the 2/2 time signature to create the perfect song for really, really slow dancing. Tony Williams performed vocal honors.
Are we going to have Jerome Kern this weekend? I LOVE him!
My favorite “story” about Jerome Kern is that he wrote all of the music for “Showboat” BEFORE he received the lyrics.
A truly masterful feat.
That IS one of my very favorites!
Funny thing...my record always stuck at a certain point in the second verse, and I still can’t listen to it without expecting that to happen. LOL!
