German Chancellor Angela Merkel's celebrated open-door policy encouraged the migration of more than 1 million refugees in 2015, and hundreds of thousands more in 2016. It was lauded as a courageous triumph of humanitarianism. Even in 2016's year-end accolades, Merkel has been given hosannas for "keeping the doors ajar."
But after last week's Berlin attack, in which a man suspected to be a Tunisian migrant intentionally plowed an 18-wheeler into a crowded Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring dozens more, it's fair to say that Merkel's celebrated policy has actually been a disaster. After all, "keeping the doors ajar" is precisely how a naive person learns of the bad intentions of an intruder. And Merkel is learning a hard lesson, indeed. She said that welcoming this enormous wave of refugees was the only way to be true to "European values." But the current wave of terrorism and the enormous fear of crime and disorder in European cities is proving mortally dangerous not just to her own party, but to the European Union itself.

Headline edit “ Destroyed”
Trump’s victory gives us a chance at survival, I’m afraid it’s too late for France and Germany.
They are already past the tipping point.
We will be too soon if we do not strictly enforce immigration laws and reduce legal immigration.
Hmm - the link said “The Atlantic”. I was about to say that it’s amazing to find such a sane article in The Atlantic.
An accidental glimmer of sanity from The Atlantic?
Merkel is a bringing to fruition the Coudenove-Kalergi plan (precursor of the EU) in a deliberate attempt to dissolve patriotism, nationalism and all forms of self-independence and cultural identification. It is the destruction of Old-European ways and rapid annihilation of the European people.
Angela should practice what she preaches. Merkel should stab her own self every day with a paring knife and leave Germany and Europe alone.
I guess the allies plan to destroy german nationalism worked a little too well.
It’s amazing how much damage one person can do.
"Third time's a charm."
Maybe Merkel will succeed where the Kaiser and Adolph failed.
Michael Brendan Dougherty seems to suffer from multiple personality disorder. One week he writes something worth reading (such as this article). The next week he writes like the typical NeverTrump GOP establishmentarian. Perhaps it depends on how much the editors at the Atlantic twist his arm and how much leeway they want to give their token “conservative.”
If you are a German, you destroy Europe — it’s what you do!
That this is from The Atlantic is FAKE NEWS by the poster. The Atlantic will never print anything like this article.
I don't think so, at least not in France, because the National Front there has been in the political mainstream and a contender for years, while in the US similar views were being completely marginalized until very recently (and if they didn't have a billionaire celebrity as a standard-bearer, they'd still be completely marginal).
“Angela Merkel Is Destroying Europe”
A helluva an understatement!
Have you seen the pictures of Paris?
It looks like it’s occupied territory.
The whole left is destroying the European nations, Marxism is a liberal mental illness that destroys all that believe in it. They need to return to Jesus for life and for wisdom, which they do not have as they are foolish.
German nationalism was aggressively suppressed, so it’s not surprising that they wind up with someone like Merkel. What excuse did other Western countries (including the US) have for adopting multiculturalist ideology?
European voters are destroying Europe
This has to end in war or disintegration of society
No other possibility
Muslims will not assimilate or convert
Yes, I know it’s bad. I also know that there are whole American cities that may as well be Kinshasa or Tegulcigalpa. If there’s still time for us, there’s still time for France, the UK, and Germany to turn things around too.
