Russian plane 'disappears from radar' near Sochi

A Russian plane has disappeared from radar just minutes after take-off from the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Russian media say.

They are quoting a source at the emergency ministry as saying the missing aircraft is a Tu-154.

Between 70 and 100 people are reported to be on board the plane.

Unconfirmed reports say the aircraft belongs to the defence ministry, flying to Syria's Latakia province. Russian officials have so far made no comment.

Other reports say it was a MOD plane filled with journalists, which seems odd.

Now they are saying the Alexandrov Ensemble (aka Red Army Choir) was on board too.

“Alexandrov Ensemble singers made up the majority of the missing passengers of the Tu-154,” a defense source told RIA, adding that 90 members of the choir were supposed to be flown to Syria on two Russian military planes.

Seven ships and a chopper are searching for the lost aircraft in the Black Sea, a source told RIA Novosti.

Remaining TU-154s in service are so old as to be virtual death traps, anyway. Given the aircraft type, this can’t be assumed as terrorism yet.
