Weening ourselves off of cheap Chinese imports will be very painful. Has to happen but better on our terms.

In the 50s and 60s much junk was 'Made in Japan'.
In the 70s, 'Made in Taiwan'.
In the 80s, 'Made in [South] Korea'.

You may pay more for American made goods, but most of them are much higher quality than the junk China makes, including its planned obsolescence.

True, but imagine the relief of a contractor at work who uses a hammer, hits the nail, and the nail stays straight while the head of the hammer doesn't break off. It's gone bad the other way, I can promise you. American made quality with tools/similar products would be a welcome relief. The chinese practice of diminished quality over time has left us with useless garbage after minimal usage.
But yes, the price shock is something we need to be sensitive to.
