The gunshots that rang out just after midnight last September sent youths in the neighborhood running scared. One 22-year-old man was killed. Three others, just passing by at the time of the altercation, were injured by the gunfire.
Sound familiar? It's not a scene from Chicago. This shooting, stemming from a "spilled drink," happened near the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.

How about they get back to us when they finally figure out that GUNS DO NOT ACT BY THEMSELVES. Oh, they won’t ever do that. Let’s see. Would banning machetes have helped the Tutsis? Or was it the Huttos? Anyway, thousands dead from MACHETE violence. Yeah, that IS how stupid they sound and act.
Guns Don’t Kill, Democrats Do.
So—They haven’t been serious up until now?
Good to know.
Satire, right?
Until they “crack down” on deadbeat fathers and fatherless homes, a lack of religion and degraded social values, drugs/drug sales in the affected areas they will see zero impact from preventing law abiding citizens the human right of self defense by firearm.
It took them 40 years to get here. It will take 40 to get back.
Short term thinking = long term problems.
Quite making excuses and blaming everyone else and realize the Leftist racist politicians have created a deeply dysfunctional “gangster” culture” in urban areas?
Want to curb all violence (not just guns)?
Hang ALL murderers, publicly, in the town square of the county seat of the county where they committed their murder(s) within a year of their conviction.
Do that for a few years and watch the crime rate drop through the floor.
They’ll never figure that out. They still believe the gun is the problem, and as long as there’s one gun left in citizen hands anywhere this will be their excuse for failure.
This violence was caused by hot-headed idiots, that's the real takeaway here. A spilled drink is just a spilled drink - guess what, there are dozens more where that one came from. Anyone who resorts to violence over something so trivial is an insecure fool.
When the Illinois General Assembly reconvenes in 2017, we will ask our colleagues to consider a proposal that adds more muscle to our gun laws.
SMH... It is not a gun problem, you don't need "gun laws." It is a violence problem.
We know what doesn't work: mandatory minimum sentences that completely take away a judge's ability to evaluate each alleged perpetrator's circumstances to see if a second chance can turn his or her life around, or not.
Well, therein lies your problem. I can tell from this you're idealistic and prone to swallowing BS from criminals. You want to believe they are just aspiring rap stars about to turn their lives around. Guess what, they aren't. They are violent thugs who only understand power - what they can and cannot do to someone else.
Also, it is becoming increasingly clear that penalty enhancements don't serve as a "deterrent" to prospective criminals.
Of course not, not when you put loopholes in the laws for them and their lawyers to exploit. You've pulled the teeth out of them.
Old myths should be cast aside. New, progressive models of criminal justice and sentencing should take their place.
I almost became physically sick at this, "new, progressive models..." Yeah, because "progressive" ideas and ideals have worked out so well in the real world... :-/
Let's reverse the order of the next two sentences:
We cannot allow this cycle of violence to continue uninterrupted.
...
To that end, we will be simultaneously offering proposals designed to decrease the prison population in Illinois through enhanced judicial discretion, expanded use of sentencing credits, and increased use of diversion programs, alternatives to imprisonment, where appropriate.
So your solution for reducing violence it to make it quicker and easier to put criminals back on the streets? Do you hear yourself? Do you have any idea how utterly idiotic you sound?
A different approach to sentencing repeat gun offenders is just one tactic we can embrace to make our communities safer.
Oh, a different approach is needed, but one much different than this trash proposal. Oh, and that "just one tactic" is an obvious lead in to advocating for more "gun control" - don't even try to deny it.
Stop the gum violets!
Yes. Someone spilled a drink on a gun and it just went nuts, trying to shoot everyone in the room...
Probably a lot more than 40 years. The problem is that adopting the policy of kicking back and letting someone else take care of your family is a lot easier than the really hard work of getting out there every day and digging into a work assignment that you really hate, but need to complete in order to put a roof over your family's head and food on their plates. Accordingly, it will take longer to correct a collection of government policies that encourage self-reliance (probably called racism these days) than it is to pretend you care about a group of people that you would NEVER have in your own house.
Obviously more gun laws and signs are needed.

So, their solution is to NOT punish criminals, but allow them to continue to roam the streets without being held accountable for their past criminal behavior. Yeah. Let me know how that works pout for you...
How ‘bout getting serious about curbing feral negro gang-bangers?
Think LBJ and the “great” society. You know, the one that ended up doing billons/trillions of dollars in damage to the community and to inner cities. Creating dependency where not much existed before. Sometimes you DON’T get what you paid for.
Liberals like changing words all the time. I propose they update that tired dog "progressive" with "Venezuela".
It could be used as a noun, adjective , and verb, as in :"Liberals want to Venezuela the crap out of this world".
Stemming from a spilled drink?
Let’s talk about about how ONLY ONE RACE will kill over a spilled drink. Or is the left cowardly to speak of the subject as Eric Holder said?
