Rolla, Mo. - There are many summer camps, something for everyone. But there's no other camp quite like this: an explosives camp. A hands-on explosives camp. Such a thing would seem impossible in modern America. These days, kids ride their trikes in protective gear. So, the very idea of explosives camp is thrilling...
Explosives Camp is an offering of Missouri University of Science and Technology -- formerly known as the University of Missouri-Rolla, formerly known as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. Rolla is midway between St. Louis and Springfield (Springfield, Mo., that is)...
Here in Rolla, the explosives guru is Dr. Paul N. Worsey...
Paul Worsey is a serious engineer -- working in a very serious field -- but he is free and easy. He laughs frequently. He wants his students to have fun, and he wants to have fun himself. He believes in straight talk, despising political correctness. He is scalding on the subject of government -- particularly its regulators. He is not against regulations; he's just against silly and ignorant regulations...

If I had a kid, I’d send them there.
Correction: If I had children, I’d send them there.
Tried to get my kids to go there years ago when they were young enough. Wife was not impressed.

Someone should start a deal like that for adults, I like to blow up s***, as much as the next kid.
My alma mater.
Ping.
Makes me think of Demolition Ranch, though I believe that’s a private video show.
Hold-my-beer-and-watch-this camp.
Hmm. What’s the age limit on this?
Going to this camp would have been much safer than what my childhood friend and I did in our attempts to create explosions.

Aw. Sad day.
Having personally “blown up stuff real good” with Worsey in years past, I can attest he is the kind of Brit that helps Make America Great Again. Would that all college profs shared his values and convictions.
Kids blow up too fast these days.
“My alma mater.”
Which one? MSM, UMR or MS&T?
One time when I was being shown around lawrence livermore national laboratory, one of the leadership made a joke. “How do you identify an explosives engineer?” He held up his hand as if it were missing most of the ring finger. It wasn’t two minutes before I passed an explosives engineer that matched the description.
I went to Colorado School of Mines. They didn’t have a camp, but the homemade(?) explosives at half-time were quite the deal. Some homemade fireworks were set off in the stadium, but the big boomers were set off somewhere up the canyon just a bit - and they were still loud. (And the echoes!)
Way back in the day (30’s - 50’s?) they would use explosives as “pranks”. There was one they did at a rival college where they blew up a statue or something! Things escalated, and iirc the National Guard was called out.
Okay - my recollection was fair of the account. 1919 though, and explosives were used on numerous occasions on both sides. Mine’s students kidnapped Denver University students, armed students manned checkpoints on the county road that went by the “M” on the mountain.

My Dad said son, you can get your engineering degree at Mizzou or Rolla School of Mines...which will it be? Took me about two seconds to answer that.
