Obama warns Trump not to overuse executive orders

WASHINGTON (UPI) — With about one month to go before he leaves office, President Barack Obama gave some exit interview-type advice to his successor Donald Trump:

Don’t rely too heavily on executive orders.

In an interview with NPR’s Steve Inskeep on Thursday that aired in its entirety Monday on Morning Edition, Obama said it’s preferable to work with Congress.

“Keep in mind, though, that my strong preference has always been to legislate when I can get legislation done,” Obama said from the Cabinet Room in the White House. “In my first two years, I wasn’t relying on executive powers, because I had big majorities in the Congress and we were able to get bills done, get bills passed. And even after we lost the majorities in Congress, I bent over backwards consistently to try to find compromise and a legislative solution to some of the big problems that we’ve got — a classic example being immigration reform, where I held off for years in taking some of the executive actions that I ultimately took in pursuit of a bipartisan solution — one that, by the way, did pass through the Senate on a bipartisan basis with our help.”

In 2014, Obama signed executive orders that shielded millions living in the country illegally from deportation.

...

“I think that he is entirely within his lawful power to do so,” Obama said.

...

“Well, it’s hard to assess because we know for example that Hillary [Clinton] won the popular vote by a sizable margin,” he said. “We know that there are a substantial number of voters out there who not only voted for me twice but currently support me who also voted for Donald Trump.

“We know that there are a substantial number of voters out there who not only voted for me twice...”

“Unfortunately, it was during the same election....”

OMG! You’re too funny! ROTFL!

The entire “first family” very obviously has serious mental issues. At the least, they’re all developmentally challenged. I’d almost say it’s a race thing, but it seems all liberals are afflicted with the same psychosis/neurosis.

Future historians will regard the Obama presidency the way the English regard Cromwell--as an aberration. A brief "continuity glitch" in the otherwise orderly succession of governance, but with less bloodshed around the gap.

I've no doubt that in due course the full extent of the Obama anomaly will be made manifest. What saved the United States was those "checks and balances" that stymied Obama plus him being seduced by the trappings of power and deciding it was better to enjoy the perks of the presidency surrounded by his flatterers than actually work at the job, which might have caused far more damage.

Given Trump's work ethic I think 2017 won't be far advanced before Obama is a distant memory heading for his footnote in history.

You only need one order to revoke all of Obama’s orders.

I am far from a constitutional scholar, but I don’t recall there n=being any mention of “mandate” in U.S. constitution. Meaningless.

They're implying that Trump shouldn't do what he promised to do because more people voted against him then for him because of the popular vote. His mandate is to do what he promised.

After Trump is inaugurated, he’ll give his first speech as President, with OBozo sitting behind him. That will be an awesome speech, not only for its content, but to watch little Barry’s expressions during it.

I would love to see that, in one feel swoop, eliminate all of Hussain’s EO’s. Is this possible, and if so, why would not Trump do this. A fresh slate. And as I’ve said all along, Trump really doesn’t need to do anything to jumpstart the economy but...eliminate all BHO’s EPA and green crap.

I’m glad there are a few FReepers out there that get my humor. It can get pretty discouraging when you post an article purely for the comedic value and no one gets it. ;o)

What goes around comes around, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, an eye for an eye... We warned the nagger that if he was going to go down the executive order road it might come back to bite him.

My memory shows the affordable care act was passed with a simple majority in the senate.

The original bill was passed by a super majority in the Senate when the Democrats had sixty votes. The original bill was so badly drafted that they subsequently had to pass another bill to fix the first one and they did so by the reconciliation process because by that time they had lost their super majority in the Senate. According to Senate rules only spending and tax bills can be passed by the reconciliation process.

Then the Supreme Court found( contrary to its proponents in the administration and congress) that the act passed constitutional muster because it was a "tax", ignoring the fact that all tax bills must originate in the house of representatives, which the ACA did not.( Dingy Harry completely gutted an unrelated bill sent from the hose and inserted the ACA into the bill)

An argument goes that since the Supreme Court has declared that it is a tax it ought to be able to be rescinded by a simple majority in the Senate since under their rules a "Tax" bill can be passed by the reconciliation process.

In any case, the amending bill that was passed subsequent to the original, can be nullified by the simple reconciliation process in the Senate. By doing so it would so impair the original that it would collapse under its own weight. Think of the whole edifice as a three legged stool and you can cut off one of the legs then the whole thing falls over.

When Trump is done, you will be able to write Obama’s legacy on a cocktail napkin.

I was thinking more along the lines of a grain of rice, but then that may be too big.

he won’t overuse it- he will use just enough EO’s to undo the previously overused EO’s issued by dear leader

A real leader doesn’t have to overuse EO’s. But then you had to over use them, Obama, because you are not a leader.

Treat them fairly? I’m good with that.

Grand jury, indictment, trial, conviction, sentence, hanging.

That’s fair.

“Biraq better hope there is no such thing as karma.”

Karma is just a misunderstanding of the principle that sin has consequences.

There’s only one way for him to escape those consequences, but I doubt that he can do it.
