WASHINGTON On Monday, 538 people will meet to determine who will be the next president.
These meetings of the Electoral College, convened in every state and the District of Columbia just shy of six weeks after Election Day, have long been little more than a formality.
But the victory of President-elect Donald J. Trump, who lost the popular vote but is projected to win the most electoral votes, has thrust the Electoral College into the spotlight once more. The conclusion of American intelligence agencies that Russia tried to intervene in the election to harm Hillary Clintons campaign has only intensified the focus in recent days.
President Obama on Friday described the Electoral College originally a compromise between those who wanted Congress to choose the president and those who favored a popular vote as a vestige. As electors gather in state capitols across the country, here is a rundown of what comes next.
Who are the electors? In short, the electors are people chosen by their state political parties to cast votes for president and vice president. Electors can be state party leaders or elected officials; sometimes they are individuals with a personal connection to a presidential candidate. Bill Clinton, for instance, is a New York elector this year.

Leaning something new is always a plus, even for an old fart such as I.
One queer, one judge, one parent, one incident, one polar bear, one iceburg, (etc.), and an entire dogma with pastoral following is invented.
That about covers it.
My guess is the NYT will manage to editorialize even the actual event. It will go as well for clinton and the NYT as did the general election.
clinton will lose, but the clinton electors will overwhelm the Trump electors in whining decibels.
NYT could raise optimism by just reporting the clinton states first, then say there is a 92% chance clinton will win this thing.
> Trump wins or faithless electors have started a new civil war.
And these electors are “voting their conscience to do what’s bet for our country”. Yeah right. Why didn’t you make that decision November 8th you wishy washy Millenial bastards? Get a phone call from Daddy Warbucks Soros and the dollar amount was just too good to pass up? Or was it his army of other Millenials who’ve been sending you death threats, emails, and phone calls and you don’t even realize that they are the very guys courting you to change your mind now because they want a corrupt globalist NWO president that Soros can use like a sock puppet? You guys really are that stupid aren’t you? No wonder you were chosen as electors, probably by Democrats. If you think what you are dealing with now is bad, go ahead change your vote but you will go down in history as traitors in Wikileaks and the Internet forever for handing your country over to a foreign enemy.

Good for keeping the brain sharp, too, learning new stuff. And there are so many things that are really interesting to delve into.

I think the aspect of an EC nullification has been soft pedaled on one side, and pushed hard on the other.
We’re somewhere in between. It can happen and It’s unclear what would be done about it. It may be clear from the Constitution, but it’s unclear if the politicians have the will to follow it.
We need Trump. We need somebody that will relentlessly keep pushing back into the progressives faces, perfectly willing to go 180 from conventional political thinking if he thinks it’s in the best interest of the United States.
But both sides are rotten. It doesn’t matter to what degree they are rotten. One way is a quick march towards tyranny, the other is slow march towards tyranny, both will conspire against Trump.
We get a brief reprieve with Trump. We get the nation’s ship going in the right direction for a few years. This is going to be hardball and somebody is going to get hurt. Either the SCOTUS, Congress or the President is going to lose some power, and another gain some.
And I’m not talking about the cheap ‘pen and phone’ power of Obama. Real power with real consequences.
Trumps legacy may well go beyond his asymmetric campaign and SCOTUS picks, there are many more benchmarks left for him to try.
Even after a long life spent learning, reading, talking, etc. I may know .0000001% of what’s out there, maybe less.
Better not be just words. If the people allow them to steal this from Trump without firing a shot then may as well call it quits as a Republic
so that group is back after 8 years of MIA. Seems all the old , usual groups will be back for Trump and these next few years. How predictable.

With me, I’m interested in enough different things that I’m requesting an extra 4 lifetimes to get a start on learning.
I expect them all to vote the way they are supposed to.
“protesters harass and intimidate electors in each state as they go to vote.”

Obviously Dale Carnegie graduates.
Just what we need. Another Civil War. :o(
The last line in the article actually reads: The next step is to swear in the winner on Jan. 20.
I thought it said: Swear at the whiner on Jan. 20.
I said to myself, "Self ... you've been doing that every since those dumb, corrupt, evil, amoral b*stards crawled out of the great trailer park of Arkansas 20 years or so ago."
I think I need another cup of coffee.
Wait! Does this mean that we won’t know the results until Jan. 6th?
No more lifetimes for me thank you - I’ve had all I can take!
We need to stop calling then the Mainstream Mediots....there is nothing mainstream about them. They are the enemy.
There are scheduled protests planned at the state capitol of all 50 states. Let’s see how many people show up - especially in the particularly frigid areas of the country. I’ll bet not that many.
Except for a handful of very vocal people lionized by the DBM, everyone else is busily going about their lives and in the midst of holiday preparations.
