For Coates, race is much more important than national identity or patriotism, or whether Obama did his duties well for the country as a whole.
The irony is that the first black President had no ancestors who were slaves in the US, but did have ancestors who were white slaveowners, owning black slaves.

You know, it must be exhausting to live your life with RACE, RACE, RACE! as your fundamental and organizing principle. It must lead to an extremely blinkered existence.

Like the author, I judge people by the color of their skin.
That’s OK ... right?

The president was a phony mulatto. He wasn’t black.

Every morning the same routine. Wake up and ask “am I still black?” Look in mirror: “yep, still black. Time to go complain about that!”

I was only able to read one-third of this drivel. I need a bucket to puke in.

Ta-Nehisi...MY president was black too.
Unfortunately, he was a traitor to America, a lousy president, and a bad example for black Americans to follow.

Not surprised that this tribute to Obie opens up with him at a party - he wasn’t good at much, but he did know how to spend time partying, and vacationing, and golfing (if not well).

Me me me. I I I.
Coates is a racist hiding in plain sight but worse than that he’s just another egomaniac.

I think in private moments a whole lot of black Americans are embarrassed by Obama.
Black Americans aspire to excellence. In entertainment, sports, other fields. The record is clear that his performance as POTUS was way below par.
Frankly they were expecting a whole lot more from the first black POTUS. The nation is full of black Americans who could have done better.
Unfortunately you won’t hear many of them say that out loud.

What a legacy! Not any of
* He was a good leader
* He was a great negotiator
* He brought the country together
* He improved our standing in the world
* He fixed ...
But
* He was black
I tried reading the essay for a while. Then tried skimming the rest looking for meaning. Maybe I missed the point since I didn’t really see any point.
I think many people who loved Obama will be feeling what my said about Hillary’s loss: It’s probably best because I don’t want to look back the rest of my life and think “Why did SHE have to be the ‘first woman president’.”
