Lloyd Marcus, in his wonderful piece "The Myth of Racist America" in American Thinker, describes how "[b]lack seniors are prone to experiencing "racism paranoia."
The issue is parodied in the Seinfeld episode when Uncle Leo attributed a overcooked hamburger (and much else in his world) to anti-Semitism. Something raised its head in an amusing way in my own life when my son's Japanese in-laws invited us to dinner in an upscale restaurant, and the service was horrible. Sighing, the old man turned to me and said, "You have to expect that when you're Japanese."
"Oh? Watch this." I turned in my seat and signaled, only to have the waaiter turn his back on me too. "See?" I said. "It's not just Japanese he's nasty to. He's an equal opportunity idiot." We all laughed and laughed and laughed. It's a story I told to a Jewish couple we know, and they laughed themselves "when that happens, we always think it's because we're Jews."
The point is that not just elderly black people, but all of us are prone to jump to conclusions about the motives of people different from us. Even a little bit different.
This is often the reason we don't get along when we don't.
Yet there has always been another, much stronger dimension to American life.

“Good, a friend of ours died and we need a tenth to make a minyan to sit Shiva.
Great story.
I didn’t know you needed ten to sit Shiva.
.
Yes. I must read about Robert Putnam. People will self segregate to live in groups most closely reflecting their own minority. Even if they live in a diverse neighborhood, they will socialize with their own ethnic group if they can.
It seems in my life dooing cooperative work and going to college and regarding highly other productive people of different ethnic/racial backgrounds was for me a mind broadening experience.
Nothing riles people up more than beginning a conversation with God or the Bible. A great opening line to use on everyone, "are you a Christian?" It is the perfect way to begin a conversation about the only thing that won't end up in the ash heap of nothingness.
I was told in my profession, Realtor, don't talk about politics or religion, "those are my favorite subjects!", I exclaimed. I decided to risk loosing clients over politics and religion, it matters that much. Talking about God or Obama/Trump these last few years, has been fun, fun, fun!
Not recent at all. Every 4 years the rumors fly that president ____ is going to declare martial law so that elections will not be held. When a republican is president, the democrats are screaming about it, when a democrat is president, the republicans do. It's as regular as clockwork, and has been going on since I've been alive.
Good for you.
And did you take the time to get outof your car and report the incident? How can you expect these things to stop if you don’t do anything about it?
That was also an episode of “Northern Exposure.” (Also, it has to be ten Jewish males 13-and-up for a minyan.)
You need ten to pray the Mourners’ Kaddish “officially.”
Thank you.
Reform Jews not so much
Which episode?
We have the series on DVD. Our favorite is "The Big Feast," Season 4, Episode 21.
Thank you. I’ve made shiva calls twice, but it was years ago.
I was not aware of the need for 10 people.
