Polar vortex redux? U.S. forecasters say it could hit next week

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Forecasters are sending chills down some spines with a prediction that much of the northern half of the United States could see frigid weather next week similar to life-threatening lows the polar vortex brought to parts of the country in 2014.

Anticipation of a freezing blast began to build this week when weather maps and forecast models showed similarities between next week's system and one that developed in January 2014.

"Upper-level atmosphere configuration very similar in scale & magnitude as infamous Jan 2014 #PolarVortex popularized by me and @afreedma," meteorologist Ryan Maue said on Twitter on Tuesday alongside maps comparing the two weather systems.

The southward shift in the polar vortex in 2014 brought the Midwest some of its coldest weather in two decades. Icy conditions snarled travel and thousands of flights were canceled or delayed.

Frigid temperatures combined with gusting winds to create life-threatening wind chills as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero (minus 51 Celsius) that killed at least nine people.

I remember when we called them cold fronts..

I remember when they didn’t use “wind chill” for the more dramatic effect. “It feels like ......”

Joe Bastardi predicted just this. In February!

What ever happened to Joe Bastardi's weekly Saturday reports? Weather Bell's web site doesn't post them anymore (where I can find them anyway).

It’s always been called the polar vortex by meteorologists (of which I am one)...it’s just that now the media has found the term out and wants to use it because it sounds cooler (lol)...and scarier. I’ve been using the term for 30 years and others before me for much longer than that. It’s not a new term. It’s just new to you and many others.

And I should add that it is a fairly recent discovery in meteorology. It wasn't really "discovered" until the 50's and high altitude radiosonde obs. The vortex sits so high up in the atmosphere that nobody knew about it until we started measuring that part of the atmosphere. Of course, it's always been there and IS in fact responsible for arctic outbreaks in the lower 48. Before the days of advance computer modeling, it was VERY IMPORTANT to know what the polar vortex was doing...because shifts in it can telegraph arctic outbreak weeks in advance. There are many old school rules of thumb that give a heads up that a major arctic shot is coming...and some of them deal with this.

Just think of the media's use of it as a shiny new toy. They'll lose interest eventually and move on...

Media will come up with a stupid name like, "Vortexageddonicane Zero Minus XX."

Oh, shoot! I hope they don't read this!

“So-called “smog” in the 60s was mainly due to a surge in volcanic eruptions and blamed on industry.”

No. That is silly.

Wunderground is particularly bad at forecasting lows. They also screwed up their Wundermap by making the ‘satellite view’ so pale you can hardly make out the clouds from the background now.
