Democrats urge Obama to pardon 750,000 young undocumented immigrants
Yahoo News ^ | December 8, 2016 | Liz Goodwin

More than 60 Democratic members of Congress are urging President Obama to protect the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who signed up for his deferred action program before he leaves office next month.

“You have pardoned hundreds and hundreds of people convicted for drug offenses,” Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said at a Wednesday press conference in Washington. “We want you to use that same pardon power for hundreds of thousands of young people who came forward because you asked them to come forward. You asked them to come forward.”

“With that comes responsibility, Mr. President,” he added.

The White House has informed the Democrats that “the clemency power could not give legal status to any undocumented individual” and that only Congress has that power. Cecilia Muñoz, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, said in a podcast last week that a mass pardon would not “protect a single soul from deportation.”

But the Democrats say in a new letter to Obama that he still has the responsibility and authority to issue a “narrow reprieve” for all civil immigration violations the young people may have committed. That would not create legal status, they argue, but could make them eligible to apply for it.

Jeffrey Crouch, a law professor at American University, said that even if this mass grant of pardon for a civil offense was possible, it’s unlikely that Obama would want to open up this “can of worms” so close to the end of his presidency. It would also be a departure from his unprecedented work commuting the sentences of more than 1,000 federal prisoners serving decades-long sentences for non-violent drug crimes.

But the Democratic representatives say Obama has a responsibility to protect the young people who trusted him and the government.

> I really don’t see the benefit in having the US government do the dirty work that makes narco-cartels profitable. “Drug dealing” is a political crime. Pharmacists do the same exact thing but they have a piece of paper from the government saying it’s OK. Morally, there is zero difference.

The governments of Mexico and other countries have been doing drug dealing with the U.S. government for decades. Look up Albert Sicila Falcon and Pablo Escobar for starters. I also interviewed a former CIA (case officer) agent years ago who swore that he saw drugs in a hangar that were being transported by his employer. He would not talk about it over the phone. I had to drive to meet him and he traveled from another state. I believed what he had to say. This was not a one time thing either.

But then, there are, sadly, posters on this site, who believe that nothing should happen to them either. :-(

Really? I say deport them...failing that, shoot them. They are invaders. We are under NO OBLIGATION to 'provide a better life for them.'

Obama already said he doesn’t have the power and it wouldn’t be enforceable.

Read the article. The dems in congress are pushing for this.

Let’s stick to deporting unless they fight back violently.

Unless you have the urge to shoot kids too.

In which case, you need psychiatric help.

Don’t put words in my mouth. Many of these ‘young undocumented immigrants’ are terrorists and gang members like MS-13 who are responsible for killing over 100,000 AMERICANS since 9/11. You shouldn’t allow yourself to be influenced by liberal linguistics.

What exactly are they seeking a pardon for? Illegal voting in presidential elections?

Obama can pardon them, then Trump can deport them.

Obama pardoning illegals would be ludicrous. They’re not citizens of the US. Trump could simply deport them, even after the “pardon”.

Yep ran across a few of those. Tip toeing around that these are poor dreamers and such. Send them all packing.

Of the 60 Damnocrats, how many of them have dual citizenships and have mexican sounding last names?

They can be pardoned for the crime of illegal entry to the U.S. and other crimes but; if they are still here the day after the pardon, they have committed the crime anew and are subject to arrest. A pardon is not citizenship or a green card.

Read the article. The dems in congress are pushing for this.

Read it. It would seem to me these 60 dems are trying to aid and abet these illegal invaders by giving them sanctuary and to further break our laws. These 60 need to be held to account.

Go get them AG Sessions. You have the proof in the letter.

I still cant get my mind around this issue... I can see Dems in office wanting the extra votes they think they can achieve with the wetbacks but what about the general public. I cant see everyone who stands for immigration believing theyre future democrat votes. there is a huge support for these waves of refugees and other immigrants from the populace... Why??

A pardon does not make legal.

Deport anyways. Deport them all.

In fact, Trump should then pardon all Republicans for tax charges but not Democrats. If pardons are so absolute, then Democrats will agree. Watch the fireworks, give Democrats an issue to occupy them for 8 years.

Can’t preemptively pardon anyone for breaking the law — which they will be doing again just as soon as the ink dries on Obama’s pardon. The relief from breaking the law requires them to be deported.
