Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has suffered a heavy defeat in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution, exit polls suggest.
An exit poll on state broadcaster RAI suggests 42-46% voted to back reform, compared with 54-58% voting No.
Two other polls gave the No vote a similar lead of at least 10 points.
Mr Renzi, who has said he would resign if he lost the vote, is due to make a statement at midnight (23:00 GMT) from his official residence in Rome.
The referendum was regarded as a barometer of anti-establishment sentiment in Europe.
The vote asked about plans to streamline parliament but it was widely seen as a chance to register discontent with the prime minister.
Populist parties supported a No vote.
The opposition Northern League leader has called for Mr Renzi's resignation.

RENXIT!
Another Globalist takes it in the pooper!!!!! My paisanos are happy!!!
Electoral college is fine.
The 17th on the other hand diluted states rights. Seen your snarky pro big government crap on here before tonight. Let me guess.... You do not belong here. You have a globalist agenda.
Hear Hear.
I was meaning to ask you what you thought about this referendum. Seemed to me like it was a power grab attempt by this lil’ turd.
100%!!!
The Globalists were all in on this. They’re tanking almost as bad as Krapernick these days...
G-D, I’m sending that to my paisanos!!!
AWESOME!!! THANK YOU!!!
The 17th amendment was a huge mistake.
Stumped by the Trump
By cutting out much of the Senate. Imagine if Obama pulled a stunt like that in order to get the GOP out of the way? There wouldn’t be a polite and civil referendum!
I think we’d end up with even more lindsey’s and mccain’s
radical neo-nazi Right ———> anti-muslim and anti-globalist Right!!!!
Cruz is with you on the 17th. I am with Trump’s agenda
Sorry for the double post folks.
Dont give a crap what Cruz is for. He is a snake. If one of us gets to talk to Donald, he will change his mind. Mattis changed his mind on waterboarding. This is the right thing and the framers knew it. The 17th destroyed states rights.
The 17th Amendment isn’t going anywhere, unfortunately. Trying take away one’s ability to vote for someone directly would be like shaking a hornet’s nest and sticking it on your head because too many Americans believe the more they get to vote the safer they will become.
Most Americans are completely ignorant of the dangers of direct democracy. De Tocqueville warned against it but he is not well read.
Italians are awake. They have been under hellfire all year with illegals. Had to appear in person with valid passport at the ticket counter as impossible to buy a rail ticket between Paris and Rome online. Frontier between Italy and France under very tight control, might as well say closed. Finally decided to cancel my plans for Rome because of the massive problems.
Yeah, by eliminating an elected Senate. He wanted to be an emperor.
