Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has suffered a heavy defeat in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution, exit polls suggest.
An exit poll on state broadcaster RAI suggests 42-46% voted to back reform, compared with 54-58% voting No.
Two other polls gave the No vote a similar lead of at least 10 points.
Mr Renzi, who has said he would resign if he lost the vote, is due to make a statement at midnight (23:00 GMT) from his official residence in Rome.
The referendum was regarded as a barometer of anti-establishment sentiment in Europe.
The vote asked about plans to streamline parliament but it was widely seen as a chance to register discontent with the prime minister.
Populist parties supported a No vote.
The opposition Northern League leader has called for Mr Renzi's resignation.

On balance, I think this counts for more than the Austrian presidential election, if for no other reason than Italy seems more threatened by a Moslem invasion via the Med. This may be an indication Italians are waking up.
The coup de gras will be Merkel. We stopped clinton. May they overcome the voter fraud
Ummm... yes, keep the electoral college, but NUKE the 17th. Vaporize the 17th. The worst thing to befall this republic.
Im expecting the markets to fall drastically by something like 2000 points before rebounding after a few hours. You gotta love the smell of financial markets burning in the morning.
Exit polls saw "No" leading in Sicily and Calabria too. Looks more like a US type urban/rural split rather than the typical Italian north/south split.
Arrivederci, Signor Renzi.
Yes—populists and anti-globalists wing everywhere but Austria!
But the ones in Austria are gaining strength, too!!!!

I'm firmly in this camp. If the 17th Amendment had never been, we would NOT have Obamacare.
Absent a 17th Amendment, SC RECALLS Graham for his position on amnesty. So think about it before you sing the praises of the 17th. They ain't.
What is the feeling of Italians regarding terrorist, er, muslim migration. And does this election reflect that mood?
The right lost in Austria 46.4% to 53.5%.
Then again, the European Establishment now has to deal with the fact that 46.4% of the voting population prefers what has been vilified as the “radical neo-nazi Right” over the Establishment candidate. And the 2018 legislative elections are coming...
Amen
Good Post
Trump effect.
The Trump Tea Party revolution continues to roll.
Pray America woke
17th Amendment needs to have a stake driven through its heart.
It removed any control the states had over their creation, the Federal government, and turned the Senate into nothing more than a more exclusive, more expensive version of the House.
4 for 5 if you count the cubs. (Lions in a few weeks, too)
