Far-right candidate Norbert Hofer has lost Austria's presidential election.
His campaign manager said he had conceded victory to independent candidate, Alexander Van der Bellen.
The Austrian presidency is largely ceremonial but the vote had been seen as a sign of how well populist candidates might do in upcoming elections in the European Union.
The result is sure to be welcomed by establishment parties and officials in the EU.
The election was a re-run of May's poll which suffered irregularities.
Former Green Party head Mr Van der Bellen had a clear lead, according to projections.

Disappointing.
Too bad, if true. The pro-Muslim-immigration party won.
Would it be wrong of me to suggest a recount?
To my understading, Hofer won an earlier election, but accusations of “irregularities” led to a second vote.
Sound familiar?
Hofer is quite staunchly on the left. But the fakenews media will insist on perpetuating the Stalinist paradigm.
Freaking Austrians. Worthless in WWI, put up no fight in WWII and just handed their country to muslims.
#### em.
Very.
No he lost the first election. He sued and the first election was annulled for “irregularities”. He was leading in the polls going into this election, so who knows.
Sudetanland. Austria, et alia, invaded by the Caliphates to protect Muslims. Past is prologue. World war three.
Damn. Well, maybe next time. Wonder how it’s going in Italy.
Why are they calling van der Bellen an “independent” when he’s affiliated with the Green Party?
Austria is in for more turmoil.
Guess the left rigged this election better than the last.
Im kind of a pessimist with elections. I’d be content enough with a 50-50 split on the amount we win and lose in upcoming European polls. A No vote in Italy tonight would be a productive political weekend all things considered.
Agree with you. A liberal couple we once knew (25 years ago) had volunteered to host a traveler from Austria as he toured America. We were invited for dinner. His two great insights were that he was able to find and buy an Austrian wine that was unavailable and if available much more expensive at “home”.
The other observation was a harangue directed at me because of my love of guns and his inability to recognize why any sane society would want or need guns.
I asked him if he had heard of a gent named Hitler.
End of dinner.
Reminded me of the Falty Tower skit.
To this day, whenever I hear the term “Twit”, he comes to mind.
Like when the call National Socialists right wing?
That’s exactly it.
That has always bothered me. They could not have been more explicit than having socialist as part of their official party name and our media still call them right wing.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
