PARIS — President François Hollande stunned France on Thursday when he announced that he would not run for a second term in next year’s presidential election.
In a televised address from the Élysée Palace, Mr. Hollande said that he was “aware of the risks” of a candidacy that would not “rally” enough people to it.
“I have thus decided not to be a candidate in the presidential elections,” Mr. Hollande said.
Mr. Hollande, a Socialist, ended weeks of speculation about his intentions to participate in a re-election bid that few observers thought he could win. He has had some of the worst approval ratings for a president in modern French history...

He knew he was toast. The Socialists might find someone else who can make the second round of the presidential election, but I doubt it.
When the first round is over April 23rd, the last two standing for May 7th will likely be Marine LePen, the Trump like national sovereignty candidate and Francois Fillon, the Ted Cruz conservative speechmaking candidate.
Daughter Lepen is no Trump, unfortunately.
Look at her program : she is a hybrid of Sanders & Stein, with a wall. She has morphed the libertarian ideology of her father into a mix of socialism and ecologism.

Why would anyone be “stunned” when it was obvious he had no chance of winning? Why would he run if just to lose?
Thank goodness Sarkozy’s out of the way now too. Hopefully the French will vote for Le Pen, if only to save their country from Islamization, the EU’s elimination of national sovereignty, and the French establishment elites. Fillon though will probably win, but he would still be much, much better than Hollande.
Oh NOW he steps away... after he has decimated his country. Seriously, Hollande has possibly irretrievably altered France. I would love to see the statistics on the drop-off of tourist dollars going into France now. I’ll bet it’s totally tanked. Good luck with your economy now, and while you support those newly minted millions of immigrants who will be on the dole for generations.
Perhaps it’s the most you can hope for with France.

Yes, I knew that. But In Europe, and especially France, she may be as good as it gets right now. If she’s willing to really address the issue of “refugees” and their concomitant violence, that may be as much as can be expected right now.
She’d completely destroy the EU. That’s a pretty big deal and she has to be prepared for what comes next
