Margaret Thatcher once famously said that the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money. Is that whats happened to the Democratic party?
Morning Joe devoted a navel-gazing segment today to the question of where Dems go from here given their loss of the presidency, their failure to take back either house of congress, and their hemorrhaging of governorships and hundreds of state-legislature seats. There was consensus that Nancy Pelosi and her septuagenarian cohort in the Dem leadership were past their sell-by dates.
But the bigger problem that was posed was the lack of a Dem agenda, and the suggestion that the Dems need to come up with new ideas. One Dem panelist claimed we do have some of those ideas, but neither he nor anyone else could describe them in any detail. And therein lies the looming disaster for the Dems.

Problem for the Dems: they’ve run out of other people’s money. What other ideas do they have?
Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.
FReepers: I unintentionally deleted my old ping list and am using an outdated one. Please let me know if you’d like to be added to the list!
I disagree.
They just chose the wrong snake oil salesman.
Interesting: I didn’t mention this in the article, but Donny Deutsch argued that it wasn’t so much the lack of ideas but the lack of a dynamic person who can galvanize the voters.
Hmmm.. looking at the html source code for a recent ping to the list might allow you to get a fresh copy of the deleted list :-)
People, stop this.
8 years ago Obama took office with an EVEN LARGER majority in both houses. There was talk of a permanent Democrat majority. There was talk of “GOP? What do they think? It doesn’t matter. They are irrelevant. Zero power.”
They over-reached.
With an even smaller majority, we could do the same.
Calm the hell down. Nothing is forever.

They are so self-absorbed with identity politics that they can’t help themselves.
With Soros, isn’t their money unlimited? They had all of Wall St donating to them. They had all of Hollywood donating to them. They had virtually all of Silicon Valley donating to them. They had the oil rich Muslim countries donating to the Clinton campaign. They had the MSM donating to them.
the Dems need to come up with new ideas.
Let’s see. They tried global warming, animal rights, gay rights, transgender rights.
Maybe they should “progress” to space alien rights. They can use Spielberg’s movie E.T. as their campaign film.
What a bunch of ignorant losers. LOOOOOOOOSERS!!!!!!
They could have chosen Ryan and opted for the future. No, they selected this freak again and made another political statement - fanatical fringe groups are more important to them than the average American voters.
Go for it LOOOOOOOOSERS!!!
” Nothing is forever.”
I do agree. If there’s one thing I’ve learned by being around politics for awhile, is that things change.
But since socialism can’t work, it won’t work, and can’t go on forever. So if Dems keep pushing it, they will eventually disappear.

That’s is so true! And that is why Trump MUST succeed. Because if he does, the GOPe is finished for at least a generation just like the RATs. Trump’s overarching goal has to be to completely destroy what is now the Republican Party or in the alternate, kill it and replace it with something with values akin to his.
Hillary talked about UFOs quite a bit.
Pelosi has a date with Father Time. She has to!
The thing that scares me is that the GOP has had control of the House for years and did absolutely NOTHING with it. The GOP has an unprecedented opportunity now to do something with its power. Most people...on both sides of the isle...think gov’t spending is for re-election, not the people. Otherwise, one is hard-pressed to explain cell phones for deadbeats. The GOP needs to cut taxes, cut spending, get the gov’t out of the marketplace and stand back and watch what happens when you don’t have an EPA-like gov’t stymieing the free market at every turn.
Hence an observation I made during the Democratic primaries:
The key difference between Hillary and Bernie:
- Bernie is a “true believer” in socialism. When asked about where all the money for some huge expensive program would come from, he just said “we’ll take it from the rich” as though it was a given as obvious as breathing.
- Hillary is pragmatic enough to know that socialism was a means to her ends, but was untenable insofar as providers/producers must be paid and there just isn’t enough money to make all those Leftist dreams happen. When asked about funding big expensive programs, she would give some persuasive & vapid response, apparently aware that “soak the rich” wouldn’t get far.
Hillary failed because she ran out of pockets to say she’d take money from.
Bernie would have won because he actually thought there were enough pockets.
Thankfully, she fought dirty and knocked him out of the ring. She still couldn’t promise enough of other people’s money to win.
“Nothing is forever.”
You are certainly correct. However, Trump is a wild card. If he delivers, the GOP stands to gain *more* in 2018 with all of the Senate seats up in solid red states. If he does a superb job, the GOP could gain a couple of seats in the “purple” tier. I think a milquetoast Republican would have meant traditional midterm losses. Trump is (or I should say appears to be) of a different breed.
This “winning” will certainly come to an end someday. Everything is cyclical. However, I have a feeling that things are just getting started for our side :-). People, in general, are completely sick and tired of the status quo.
“With _____, isnt their money unlimited?”
Nope.
Per my prior post: Hillary knows there’s a finite amount of money available, and Leftist generosity therewith exceeds it. She couldn’t promise enough freebies to win, knowing that as POTUS she’d actually have to write the checks - and knew what would happen when, probably on her watch, they would start doing what the Left can’t comprehend - bounce.
JUST STOP.
We are IMMEDIATELY going to hear . . . “we have power! We can do all the things we want!”
The Dems had power and did a LOT of what they wanted, and it was too much.
Over-reaching means you can’t have everything you want. Get calibrated on this now. And no, don’t then stand up and say WHAT THE HELL DID I VOTE FOR? You voted against Hillary. You voted against. Not for.
It’s just 8 years since they had an absolutely overwhelming majority. Now they are in a thin, not overwhelming, minority, and we won the presidency by just 100K or so votes across 3 states. We have FAR LESS majority than they did, and THEY over reached.
With our smaller majority, it takes even less to over-reach.
Be Careful.
