Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara will stay in role after President-elect Trump asks him to
New York Daily News ^ | 11/30/2016

Preet Bharara said Wednesday that he'd agreed to stay on in his role as Manhattan U.S. Attorney at President-elect Donald Trump's request.

Following a meeting with Trump inside Trump Tower, Bharara explained that he had been summoned by the President-elect to discuss remaining in his position and had made up his mind "to stay on."

"The President-elect asked, presumably because he's a New Yorker and is aware of the great work that our office has done over the past seven years ... to discuss whether or not I'd be prepared to stay on as the United States attorney to do the work as we have done it, independently, without fear or favor for the last seven years," Bharara told reporters inside the lobby of the mogul's Midtown abode.

"We had a good meeting. I said I would absolutely consider staying on. I agreed to stay on," Bharara said, adding that he'd already notified Trump's pick for U.S. Attorney General, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), of his choice.

The News reported earlier this month that Trump would likely ask Bharara to stay on in his role, despite the fact that incoming Presidents typically bring in their own people to replace the current crop of U.S. attorneys across the country.

"He has a very high regard for him," a campaign official told The News shortly before the election about Trump's fondness for Bharara's tenacity. "Obviously it's caught his attention what (Bharara'sObama ) done in New York. It's the same approach Mr. Trump would like to bring to Washington."

So far, the guy is like Eliot Ness. He brought down the GOP leader of the Senate, the Dmocrat leader of the Assembly and he recently indicted a bunch of Andew Cuomo's buddies.

He’s the real deal. He’s been busting corrupt NY politicians by the bunches and he seems to really enjoy it.

Fantastic! I’ve heard only great things about this gentleman. By all accounts he’s a fearless pitbull of a prosecutor, that has gone after the largest of criminal fish. Hopefully he will successfully prosecute two more corrupt fish in the coming years. ;)

This is the guy, who at Eric Holder’s behest prosecuted and jailed Dinesh D’souza for an offence that usually merited a slap on the wrist. It was a political prosecution. I would have thought Trump could have done much better.

Preet is a very good prosecutor. He took down two of the three most powerful elected officials in NY—Sheldon Silver and Dean Skelos, and he is investigating Cuomo still.

RE: OK NYers, what is the low down on this guy?

He is the US Attorney for the Southern District of NY, the district with the most incorruptible reputation.

In His career, He has prosecuted nearly 100 Wall Street executives, reached historic settlements and fines with the four largest banks in the US, and closed multibillion-dollar hedge funds for activities including insider trading and fraud.

He also prosecuted New York state politicians, including the successful indictments of Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver and the Majority Leader of State Senate, Dean Skelos, and at one time he threatened to prosecute the governor Andrew Cuomo for alleged corruption. He is currently investigating Mayor Bill De Blasio for influence peddling.

This guy is DeBlasio’s and Cuomo’s worst nightmare, especially now with no Loretta Lynch or Barky to protect them. And be warned, those GOPs who transgress will be in his sights as well.

The interesting thing about NYS and-or NYS-based prosecutors isn’t the list of people they’ve prosecuted. It’s the lists of people/businesses given a pass. When it comes to this guy, up to date, he’s let a lot skate.

Great news. Now he can bring Cuomo down along with the rest of the NY political establishment (Dems and Reps). If there ever was a “drain the swamp” appointment, this is it.

Isn’t he the one who would prosecute the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation as the HQ is New-York based? I read that in an article before the election. They said he was a very tough guy.

RE: This is the guy, who at Eric Holder’s behest prosecuted and jailed Dinesh D’souza for an offence that usually merited a slap on the wrist

Well, D’Souza was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house near his home in San Diego and five years probation. He was also required to perform community service during his “confinement”. Is that a slap on the wrist or what?

______________________________________________________

Yep, at least in the New York part of the investigation.

The New York-based probe is being led by Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Many conservatives see this as a positive development as prosecutors in Preet’s district are generally thought to be more aggressive than the career lawyers within the DOJ.
