Regarding how long, here’s a NY Times item from late 2006 recognizing it as a new buzzword/buzz phrase. Which means it had been around for a bit before that.

Looking at some other posts here, 2006 does seem to be the start of reasonably widespread use of the term.
Yeah, the media whitewashes Islam to try to make it look way better than it historically has been.
Yes they’re all potential jihadists. They lay in wait. I don’t believe any of them saying he was polite and went to church. They will never turn into the police their own. NEVER. So this business that we could and should work with their community is garbage. We don’t owe them anything.
