General David Petraeus spent an hour meeting with Trump on Monday at his offices in Trump Tower in Manhattan and has emerged as a top contender for Secretary of State, along with Mitt Romney and Rudolph Giuliani.
He is praised as a politically astute military commander with extensive experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, two hot spots that will immediately be facing the new president. His CIA experience gave him broad exposure to Americas clandestine operations around the world, and he already has an extensive network of connections with heads of state and foreign and defense ministers.
Under President Bush, Petraeus led the troop surge in Iraq and helped persuade Obama to pursue a similar strategy in Afghanistan. He is still frequently cited for his work as editor of The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual, which laid out the troop-intensive strategy used in these two operations.
However, during the presidential campaign, Trump declared his opposition to this kind of intensive engagement and said the United States should stop attempting to build other nations with its intensive interventions.
A Petraeus nomination would also be problematic because Petraeus was convicted of mishandling classified information in a scandal stemming from his extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. During the relationship, Petraeus turned over his confidential diary to Broadwell, leading the F.B.I. to recommend that he be charged with a felony. Petraeus pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. Considering Trumps strong criticism of Hilary Clinton for her use of a private email address and server for classified information, a Petraeus nomination would raise charges of hypocrisy.

Agreed - Romney over Petraeus. The scandal should remove him from consideration. My preference is none of the above. Newt would be my choice for SoS over any of those three. I’d rather have Condi back....
The State Department would effect gun ownership by...? (not that I disagree with your opposition to Petraeus).
He already got a bone in his hands.
Me too.
If you don’t indict her, how do you pardon her? As far as I’m concerned, indict her, convict her or take a plea, jail her for a time, and then pardon her, after her hair turns white and the botox wears off.
What? You’re with the transition?
heh heh heh
Nothing at all. re SOS, I just throw the chum and watch you guys eat it. This is the latest rumor, and who knows if it’s real until he’s in office, refusing to help mothers whose hubbies whisk the kids off to the Hijaz without a by-yer-leave-deary.
Thanks for asking. Things like this:

International & United Nations Gun Control
NRA has been engaged at the United Nations and elsewhere internationally in response to overreaching small arms initiatives for two decades. During this time, we have been actively opposing transnational efforts that would limit Americans Second Amendment freedoms. NRA has been a recognized Non-Governmental Organization at the United Nations since 1996. Our status as an NGO allows us to closely monitor the internal UN debate over firearm issues and report back to our members.
The most pressing international threat to U.S. gun owners is the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). Among its most egregious provisions, the treaty encourages national recordkeeping requirements for end users of covered arms (including firearms), and suggests that national governments share such records. Further, the ATT compels countries to make arms import and export decisions based upon a trading partners willingness to abide by the treatys requirements, which could isolate the United States from legitimate trade in arms or force it to adopt restrictions detrimental to Second Amendment rights. During the drafting phase, NRA vigorously advocated for civilian firearm ownership be removed from the treatys scope. Those recommendations were ignored, meaning U.S. firearms policy could become the rest of the worlds business and subject to its approval, on pain of trade restrictions if it doesnt meet international norms.
Secretary of State John Kerry signed the ATT on behalf of the U.S. on September 25, 2013. NRA continues to work with its Senate allies to prevent ratification or implementation of the treaty in the U.S.
I can picture Donald’s response to these international initiatives: .l.. ..l. An SOS would have to implement that two-fingered response, even if he himself was for it.
Really? With 340 million people in this country and this convict is the only one they can find?
Enh. *shrug* I’ll take the job.
Trump needs someone for SecState who can cut through all the bullcrap and fix the department. Like everything else a rat touches, State is seriously broken and needs to be gutted and rebuilt. Can Petraeus do that?
It’s the same thing with every department. Everything in Washington is broken and Trump needs to put not just loyalists there, but people who can gut everything and rebuild.
If a man will cheat on his wife, then he’ll cheat on his country.

Is this the poetic style of e.e. cummings, or Ezra Pound?
Nominating Petraeus would send an unmistakably clear signal that what Hillary did with classified info.....was no big deal.
Exactly! Or, should the opportunity arise, sell out the one that put him there. But from what I hear and read about the Department of State, that is SOP. David will fit right in. He has been groomed by both political Parties. I would never consider him for that reason alone, but it is Donald’s call and his back. If he wants it full of knives, I am sure that the Establishment types are willing and able to put them there. Right now, Allan West or Newt would be my choices.
