Unsend
November 26, 2016
Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
1 Peter 3:10
Have you ever sent an email and suddenly realized it went to the wrong person or it contained harmful, harsh words? If only you could press a key and stop it. Well, now you can. Several companies offer a feature that gives you a brief time after sending an email to stop it from leaving your computer. After that, the email is like a spoken word that cannot be unsaid. Rather than being seen as a cure-all, an unsend feature should remind us that its extremely important to guard what we say.
In the apostle Peters first letter, he told the followers of Jesus, Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing. . . . For, whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it (1 Peter 3:911).
The psalmist David wrote, Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips (Ps. 141:3). Thats a great prayer for the beginning of each day and in every situation when we want to strike back with words.
Lord, guard our words today so we may not harm others by what we say.
Father, teach us first to guard our hearts so that we may guard our tongues. And help us, when we do say things we regret, to humbly apologize and seek forgiveness.
The tongue has the power of life and death. Proverbs 18:21
The apostle Peter may be one of the last people from whom we would expect counsel on bridling our tongues. He was the one to chastise Jesus and claim fidelity even if all others failed, and yet he later disowned Christ (Matt. 26:33, 6975). He was the only disciple to resort to violence (v. 51; John 18:1011), and yet he encouraged the mistreated and displaced not to return like for like (see 1 Peter 3:9). Through the work of the Holy Spirit, Peter finally understood the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:3844. Have you wished you could hit rewind and take back your words or actions? Is it comforting to know that just as Peter was changed, you too, through the Holy Spirit, can experience growth and change?

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
COLE PORTER
JUBILEEIn 1935, Cole and Moss Hart took a round-the-world voyage by ocean liner with their entourages with the intention of writing a new musical. The jubilee was that of George V in England. The musical fielded royal characters based on their friends. The show opened to good reviews, but after cast major changes the attendance decreased until it closed seven months later. This was the show that gave young Montgomery Clift his first break.
ARTIE SHAW: BEGIN THE BEGUINETonight is dedicated to one of Coles signature tunes. A beguine was originally a Christian lay woman of the medieval period living in a religious community without formal vows. But in the creole of the Caribbean, the term came to mean white woman, and then was applied to a style of a slow dance.
Rather than write in the standard 32 bar format, Cole wrote this in 108 bars. Each of the five sections runs 16 bars, not eight, and he attaches a 28 bar coda. All that work at Harvard paid off! Alec Wilder: A maverick, an unprecedented experiment and one which, to this day, after hearing it hundreds of times, I cannot sing or whistle or play from start to finish without the printed music.
Thanks to its length and complexity, the song gained little popularity at first. In 1938, Artie Shaw recorded a swing version. After signing with RCA Victor, he chose Begin the Beguine to be the first of six sides he would record with his new 14-piece band.
RCA characterized it as the long tune as that nobody could remember from beginning to end anyway. As a result, it became the flip side to Indian Love Call. The identity of the man who turned the record over is lost to history, but thanks to him, Begin the Beguine took off, made #3 on the Hit Parade, and skyrocketed Artie and his band to fame. It became one of the most popular songs of the entire Swing Era.

You’ll be hearing a lot of that tune this evening. Everybody had a different way of handling it.
