Prior to todays Lions-Vikings Thanksgiving Day contest at Ford Field, Aretha Franklin belted out what may very well be the longest rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Ever!

"Respect the classics, man, it's Hendrix!"
It is one of my fantasies to sing it for an event, to fill in at the last second. It is the only song I can sing and I’ve practiced it enough.
LOL...”The Duck of Death!”
LOL, I still laugh at that!
LOL! Didn't Richard Harris just have a relatively small part in that movie where Gene Hackman kicks the crap out of him, and then runs him out of town?
Or was that the part you enjoyed?
Are you kidding me? They'd hate a Gospel version!
They'd rather hear some jabbering murderer (with bitches and hos) hip-hop it.
One of my all time favorite silly movies!
Jim Carr: Hi, Jim Carr again. Denis, I know that some in our audience dont know the finer points of hockey. Could you tell them, for example, what is icing?
Denis Lemieux: Well, um, icing happen when the puck come down, bang you know, before the other guys you know. Nobody there, you know. My arm go comes up then the game stop then start up.
Jim Carr: I see. What is high-sticking?
Denis Lemieux: High-sticking happen when the guy take the stick, you know, and he go like that.
[high-sticks Jim Carr]
Denis Lemieux: you know. You dont do that.
Jim Carr: You dont do that?
Denis Lemieux: Oh no, never, never.
Jim Carr: Why not?
Denis Lemieux: Against the rules. You know, youre stupid when you do that. Just some English pig with no brains, you know.
Jim Carr: Uh, what is slashing?
Denis Lemieux: Slashing is um, like that.
[demonstrates on Jim Carr]
Denis Lemieux: You know.
Jim Carr: Mm-hmm. And theres a penalty for that?
Denis Lemieux: Yeah and for the trip also, you know like that.
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: . And for hook like this.
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: . And for spear, you know, like that.
[demonstrates]
Denis Lemieux: You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free.
Time of possession 4:35.
LMAO.
American singers never improvise on the Canadian anthem at hockey games. It would be considered disrespectful. But they butcher our anthem all they want.
I like Aretha, but she should never, ever, ever do that again. It did not even resemble the star spangled banner, and she acted like she did not know how to play the piano. The whole thing hurt my ears, and gave me a headache. It seemed to never end.. what has happened to her?
I prefer the French lyrics to “O, Canada”...
O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée,
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
O, Canada! Land of our forefathers,
Thy brow is girt with glorious flowerlets.
For thy arm knows how to bear the sword,
It knows how to bear the cross.
Thy history is an epic
Of the most glorious exploits.
And thy valor, tempered with faith,
Will protect our hearths and our rights!
Will protect our hearths and our rights!
Did she sing all the verses ???
so what’s the problem ???
Before watching the vid, I thought she did more than the first stanza (which is the norm these days). No, she just stretches it out, but stays with just the first.
The whole thing is fairly long:
The Star-Spangled Banner
O say can you see, by the dawns early light,
What so proudly we haild at the twilights last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
Oer the ramparts we watchd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foes haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, oer the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the mornings first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battles confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washd out their foul footsteps pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lovd home and the wars desolation!
Blest with victry and peace may the heavn rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preservd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - In God is our trust,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave.
I actually stop by the TV to watch/listen. I commented to my husband that it was horrible and long.
“no point in continuing to interpret it after Hendrixs definitive performance. Just replay the tape.”
Agreed. He didn’t stand on a soap box, or make a big deal out of it. He just did it on the spur of the moment. Even the band was taken by surprise. They had no idea what he was going to do.
When the press asked him about it later, he just shrugged and said, “it’s our country’s song. I just felt like playing it.”
I felt that she should have been handcuffed and arrested at the conclusion of her atrocity.
I agree, with one exception. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock.
I was waiting for the F Donald Trump crescendo.
It seemed as if it was all about her.
But to be sure: it was more honorable than taking a knee.
