As ABC 10 News reports, the incident occurred in the cafeteria of Silver Trail Middle School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Asked by a friend if she would share her peach, the girl used a knife from her lunchbox to cut the fruit in half. Shortly after, she found herself in the principal's office, being coined a threat to her fellow students.
School officials say the honor roll student violated a district rule by bringing the knife to school. Her parents, however, find it nonsensical that their daughter's small, dull butter knife qualifies as a weapon. Andrea Souto, the girl's mother, explains to ABC 10 that the knife in question is considered safe for babies:
This is a set of a spoon, fork, and knife [is] for toddlers one-year-old[s]. It is made for children to learn how to eat properly. She's used it since she was baby.
The Soutos say that the experience has been difficult for their daughter. Usually a generous girl who's eager to share and help others, she is now fearful about making another mistake. Ronald Souto tells ABC 10:
She's afraid now of the educators. She's afraid of people at school. They need to change the system.
A spokeswoman for the Broward Country school district, however, says that the school was simply following their policy on weapons.

These government workers are no longer allowed to think or use common sense.
It’s a shiv. Schools are prisons and the inmates have no rights..
I once carried a Civil War sword to school for show and tell. There was no panic. Other kids thought it was neat.
How in God’s name did any of us survive to this day with all the idiotic bans on everything? Next thing we know, we may have to ban being alive altogether, that is except for those who believe they are far more intelligent than we.
I, too, would yank that child out of the school and sue the district for mental cruelty. We purposely let knife wielding illegals enter our country that maim and murder innocent victims. And these ne’er-do-wells put a child through this over a play knife? The education system in this country has gone amuck. Maybe the new education director will put some common sense back into the schools. . . including higher ed.
You sue their fornicating asses off.
During hunting season shot guns were visibly on racks in the back of pickup trucks in our high school parking lot. No one thought a thing about it. Knives were visible on persons within the school as well. No incidences. What does that tell you about how far our nation has gone a rat hole?
Click on the keyword “zero tolerance” and you will find hundreds—maybe even more than a thousand—similar stories on just this site. It truly amazes me how common sense is so lacking among certificated public school personnel, the vast majority of whom hold advanced degrees.
Would have been okayif she was muslim and her lunckbox looked like an ied.
Homeschooling yet?
No, she learned the proper lesson. You need to home school her or put her in a private school.
People have lost their freaking minds! Who even imagines this kind of crazy crappola? People seem to have lost the ability to reason. SICK of it.
Time they stop classifying EVERYTHIBG as a WEAPON!. When I was 12 I wore my Girl Scout Pocket Knife on my belt every Friday because the GS Meeting was immediately after school. I still have that knife which is now well over 60 years old and use if often.
Fools are born every day. When are we going to get the fools out of our educational system?
Granted school districts make their own rules but lets see if Betsy DeVos will make any comments about such horse hockey. This zero tolerance on toddler/butter knives and pop tart gungs must be stopped.
Better yet, strip all idiots from their teaching licenses and throw out educational fools who promote such crap!
I cast and finish machined a functional quarter scale replica of a Civil War era cannon complete with cannon balls.
For my final grade, I actually fired the cannon and the school newspaper wrote an article in the paper.
Try THAT in todays school environment.
It was a different time and place.
How about mumbley-peg, which we played? And I’m a girl!
Broward County. ‘Nuff said.
Are our schools (and other workplaces) these days filled completely with drones who just follow any “official policy” regardless of how nonsensical it is?
