Donald Trump, police union at odds over ‘sanctuary cities’ funding
Washington Times ^ | 11/22/2016 | Andrea Noble

The country’s largest police union, which endorsed Donald Trump for president, is wary of his stance on a key campaign issue: his promise to withhold funds from so-called “sanctuary cities.”

As part of his first 100-days action plan, Mr. Trump has pledged to block all federal funding to jurisdictions that shield illegal immigrants.

But in recent days, mayors and police chiefs in major cities across the country have pledged to stand behind their sanctuary city policies in defiance of Mr. Trump’s plans.

The stance creates a conundrum for the National Fraternal Order of Police — which doesn’t support the sanctuary city concept but also worries that public safety could be harmed if funds for law enforcement initiatives are withheld from cities.

“We do not support the withholding of public safety funds as a hammer,” said FOP Executive Director James Pasco. The FOP, which has more than 330,000 members, has been very supportive of the Republican president-elect, and hopes that Mr. Trump’s election will usher in a new era of respect and support for law enforcement. But Mr. Pasco said that withholding federal funds to local governments and their law enforcement agencies ultimately would endanger residents.

“You can’t hold people’s safety over their heads to get them to come to your point of view,” Mr. Pasco said. To compel cities to re-evaluate their sanctuary status, “some other levers are going to have to be pulled,” the police union leader said.

It’s not entirely clear which jurisdictions could be at risk for losing federal funds under Mr. Trump’s plan, as there is no legal definition for “sanctuary city.” The term generally refers to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, for example, by not notifying immigration officials when an undocumented immigrant is going to be released from custody.

Eventually I think the FOP will realize that if their cities take the hit, while police and fire will get some pressure, the elected city leaders are going to take *intense* pressure. And they will fold, or be out of a job quickly, and the police will likely get new elected leaders more sympathetic to the police and fire.

Then mayors and police chiefs in major cities will go without the funds ... stupidity and the effects of stupidity!

“Easy solution. Fund police, fire and other emergency.”

But the LAPD came out against Trump on sanctuary cities

Nixon made a big mistake in centralizing funding and control of the police in the Presidency and the beltway. Do Local police now serve and protect local citizens? Or do they serve the Fed bureaucracy.

This should be a teaching moment for the left to learn the dangers of centralization.

So no change to the status quo, then. Ask the parents of the late Kate Steinle about "endangered residents".

.......among the Obama administration’s rank failures....

....he failed to challenge a 2013 San Francisco ordinance (a sanctuary city mandate) that protected Mexican illegal Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez from being turned over to ICE. Lopez Sanchez had been convicted of seven felonies and deported five times when “brilliant” San Francisco DA George Gascon dropped a decades-old marijuana charge....

.....sanctuary city Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi (uber-liberal voted out of office) released Mexican illegal Lopez Sanchez rather than hand him over to ICE, as ICE requested.

Just weeks later, authorities charged the Mexican national for the shooting death of city resident Kate Steinle out for a Sunday stroll w/ her dad. Lopez Sanchez has pleaded not guilty.

(hat tip Ozark Tom) Aiding, abetting, accessory, and conspiracy charges MUST be considered for L/E and other actors involved with coddling these illegal felons.

Kill all federal funding to cities and states.

Sounds good, until the people who live and/or work in those cities stop paying the tax money that provides that federal funding. And make no mistake, there are quite a few corporations in those cities that provide a lot of income for the IRS, especially when you factor in what their employees are paid.

Better to stop the frivolous funding across the board, and not just the sanctuary city nonsense. i'd start with the federal funding that is provided to the ACLU, then PBS, then National Endowment for the Arts, and then ALL foreign aid, and then...you get the idea.

In Illinois, there have been a lot of "stop everybody" road blocks where the police make every vehicle stop so they can look it over. Supposedly this is to look for things like seat belt violations, DUI's, expired license plates or lack insurance, etc. Those programs are always funded by federal tax dollars, because apparently all of the officers involved have to work overtime to cover the additional duty.

I do not recall any instances where a felon illegal was taken into custody and removed from society. Maybe it happened and not reported....

Why are federal funds going to cities anyway. Cities belong to the states, let them fund them and live within their budgets. I’m tired of the federal government funding states/cities that squander their funds and rely on the feds to bail them out.

Well then they should take the federal corporate tax cuts and fund the cities directly. The federal bureaucRATs simply suck up 2/3 of the revenue before they return it.

If the cities get too crazy, those businesses can decide to exit-stage-right....just as they have from Detroit.

Maybe there will be some nice rural off ramps and rail spurs that develop into hopping industrial parks.

“What does the National Fraternal Order of Police want Trump to do??? They must know that criminal illegals are killing people, flooding our cities with drugs, and overloading the federal system in many areas.”

More killings, more demand for cops...

I know that every time I decided to do something illegal or violate an ordinance the suits always tell me not to worry about it / NOT / They fine my a**, isn’t that like not giving a city extra money for not being helpful. Most cities decided not to cooperate because the feds wouldn’t pay for detentions and stiffed them for the bill.

Did the Fraternal Order of Police think their endorsement somehow “bought” President Trump?

Or are these just dirty cops trying to keep the status quo?

I wonder how loudly they say that when Congress ties highway funding to the annual whim.

“Selectively cut off funds for liberal programs and not for public safety...”

You can’t do that because “public safety employees” are sucking up 80% of the budgets of most cities and towns. Leaving them with Federal money would mean that the sanctuary cities could just roll on.Seems as though good cops and FF’s are going to have to come at more reasonable prices. Besides the Fraternal Order of Police is just a polite name for a PE union.

Actually, I agree. Why is the FedGov involved in giving these funds out at all? What does local police have to do with anything national in any way?

They care nothing about public safety or national security. Do what is required by law and courts or lose it all.
