President-elect Donald Trump says he will move immediately to deport or imprison two million, maybe three million, unauthorized-immigrant criminals. What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, he said on Sunday on 60 Minutes.
Like many of his proposals, this one sounds tough and straightforward, but makes no sense under scrutiny and is frightening to think about.
Start with the fact that the target number is made up. There simply arent as many criminal immigrants as he imagines. According to rough estimates by the Migration Policy Institute, of the countrys 11 million unauthorized immigrants, about 820,000 have criminal records. About 300,000 of those have felony convictions and are presumably the bad people Mr. Trump is talking about. If he deports those and only those, it will be a remarkable display of law-enforcement discretion, since he said that there were lots of terrific people among the unauthorized who might be allowed to stay, after the border is secured and after everything gets normalized.

Their other article makes it 1861 since apparently the Rebel flag is only now seen at Trump rallies.
AHA! So President-Elect Trump has tricked The Slimes' Editorial Board to admit that Barky has allowed 300,000 felons to remain in this country.
Not to me, snowflake. Not to me.
Only 11 million?
I don’t think there is much sky left to fall.
“...According to rough estimates by the Migration Policy Institute, of the countrys 11 million unauthorized immigrants, about 820,000 have criminal records...”
If they are “unauthorized” that means they are illegal, which, in turn, makes them “criminals”, you twit!!!!!
the Ameriphobic presstitutes at the old Gray Whore’s bordello just can’t seem to ever get it right
40 million illegals and they populate half the prisons in CA.
“but makes no sense under scrutiny and is frightening to think about.”
Much like the NYT.
obama has already deported millions. The difference is that Trump is a Republican, and the times hates everything he does.
One can only begin to imagine how unbiased this Migration Policy Institute is....
OK, now I'm assured that this is an unbiased source.
Those undocumented citizens are as innocent as Hillary!
Your NYT.
820.000 out of 11 million is about 7%. I’ve read that roughly 1 in 3 US citizens have criminal records. People here illegally seem to be living lives of conspicuous virtue.
Actually, the NYT estimates there are 11 million illegal immigrants. That means there are 11 million criminals in our country illegally. Even if he only deports the 300,000 with additional felonies, that is a very large number. If he deports all of them, that is even better.
What is the frickin’ problem with getting rid of criminals, not just criminals because they are here illegally, but actual convicted criminals who are furthermore here illegally?
NYT is making up random numbers and telling everyone to believe their numbers instead of FedGov insiders that have briefed Mr. Trump.
1. There is no such LEGAL AND BINDING category in US citizenship as "undocumented".
2. You are not a "citizen" until you have been naturalized through the legal process and have taken the citizenship oath. Using this noun is invalid.
