It’s not a bad idea, it’s SOP. There is no way to guarantee his family will not encounter classified information while around Trump. So the SOP is to provide a standard Secret clearance to family who will be with the potus on occasions.
Kushner is not directly related so it may indeed take a while. Most of Trump’s immediate family will already be vetted in Trump’s clearance documentation.

Regardless, when Trump is president he can include who he wants.

I can understand Trump depends on Kushner and his kids for support and their input, but none will have official positions in the administration and all of them are going to be keeping their day jobs running their family businesses. All have international connections as part of that business. What if information they get during their briefing would happen to impact their business in one country or another? Are we expected to trust that they won’t act on it? It is an incredibly slippery slope that could leave everyone open for ethical questions, if not legal prosecution. Better not to even open up to the possibility.
Given what Donald Trump has accomplished, this request doesn't bother me, and I'm not about to second guess him.
I suppos if everyone gets hysterical about it, he'll change his mind...
