(CNN)House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday despite Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric, lawmakers are not prepared to form a deportation force to round-up and deport undocumented immigrants.
"We are not planning on erecting a deportation force. Donald Trump's not planning on that," Ryan told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."
"I think we should put people's minds at ease: That is not what our focus is. That is not what we're focused on. We're focused on securing the border. We think that's first and foremost, before we get into any other immigration issue, we've got to know who's coming and going into the country -- we've got to secure the border," he added.
Ryan deflected questions about whether he'd support Trump's calls to slap hefty tariffs on imports from countries like Mexico.
Instead, Ryan said, he supports tax reforms to address the same challenges "without any adverse effects -- without any collateral damage to the economy."
The House speaker also said he is on board with Trump's call to keep some elements of President Barack Obama's signature health care law.
But he won't commit to mandating insurance coverage of birth control for women at no cost.
"Obamacare is failing. It must be replaced. We're going to do that. We're excited about it ... We can fix what is broken in health care without breaking what is working in health care," Ryan said.
The Wisconsin Republican said he agrees with Trump's comment to CBS' "60 Minutes" that Obamacare's laws against barring those with pre-existing conditions from receiving coverage and allowing those up to age 26 to remain on their parents' insurance can stay in place even as the GOP pushes to repeal Obamacare.

Obama Admin is calling Illegals, “Immigrants” D’oh
Just the beginning of the GOP resistance and efforts to undermine Trump. These despicable people are a bunch of backstabbers.
Trump knows that DC is a swamp, but I’m not convinced that he fully understands just how deep and treacherous it is. After a few months in office he will.
wrong way ryan back at it. we’ll have to meltdown the phones again. get ready.
If Ryan is allowed to remain as Speaker he will be one of Trump’s biggest obstacles on Capitol Hill. Ryan must go.
How about secure the border, cut off the freebies, deport them as you encounter them? Send a deportation force to nab criminal illegals (again, nab others as encountered).
Ryan needs to be gone yesterday... shut up and don’t even say bye...just leave Romney butt buddy.
Everything we need is already in place. We just need to let them get on with it
Paul,
Trump does not need you to enforce the law. He only needs to let ICE do its job under the existing laws. No vote needed.
Sheesh...a few threads down ryan says no...I hate that guy. Please dump him
The first piece of swamp sludge to go.
“...President-elect Donald Trump has said that he plans to deport two to three million undocumented immigrants immediately - and that he will be building his wall along the US-Mexico border...”
What do you say to that, Ryan?????
Oops..posted that on the wrong thread
RINO Ryan will either do what Trump wants or Trump will fire his a$$
as Speaker.
Both sides in the debate about deporting illegal aliens seem to have accepted wholesale certain phrases, concepts and images.
We hear about roundups as if were talking about lassos and runaway cattle. Advocates for illegal immigration are, as always, quick to forward the notion that apprehending criminals (yes theyve committed a crime. QED.) will be akin to (all together now) Nazi Germanys arbitrary persecution, collection and detention of Jews. Cue the Photoshops and cartoons of guards, dogs, prison buses, trains, camps, groups of sad sacks with hands raised in surrender, long lines of prisoners chained together, etc.
But were talking about government here. The same government whose idea of fixing anything is usually to throw money at it and stand around waiting for the next coffee break. Government doesnt do anything with style or even PR these days. Its a shambling grey blob.
The reality is that we identify, locate and apprehend thousands of criminals, fugitives and those with outstanding warrants for their arrest every day, all day. There are sheriffs offices in every county in America. There are US Marshals. 99% of these incidents are peaceful, even mundane. A knock on the door, a shrug of the shoulders, a reading of rights, an application of handcuffs and a ride in a car or a van. No muss, no fuss. Do some evade such enforcement? Resist violently? Of course. But as usual the publics view has been distorted by ludicrous dialogue-heavy standoffs in Hollywood films. The vast majority of those mug shots printed in newspapers and shown on TV news were obtained during another humdrum shift by police on the streets or another humdrum shift at the regional jail.
Similar enforcement by immigration authorities will be equally humdrum and bureaucratic. Granted, locating individuals who have, intentionally or otherwise, no proper identification or records can be tricky but by the same token most of these people have been brazenly hiding in plain sight, smugly aware that La Migra pose no threat to them thanks to La Migras cynical, craven political bosses.
Besides, we are always told that the illegals are solid, peaceful, hard-working mostly law-abiding citizens (except for that pesky border-jumping/visa-violating part) who just want A Better Life (and, of course, we are obligated to give it to them) Their own mouthpieces emphatically state they are not violent, so lets take them at their word.
Deportations will involve small groups, say 10 or 12, but they might involve just a few people or even a lone individual depending on home nation or other circumstances. White vans, chartered planes, Air Force bases closed to the public and the usual drab blankness of officialdom will rob the propagandists of the sort of 40s or 60s iconography they so desire to inflame passions.
The laws are already on the books. The methods and procedures for arrest are long-established. It wont be East Germany. It wont be Bosnia. It wont be Stalins Russia. It will merely be another collar felt, paperwork done, mug shot snapped and a one-way trip home.
The Chamber of Commerce and its political allies will fight Trump every step of the way. Its a very powerful and influential lobby.
Trump needs a legislative blitz right off the bat to establish himself as a person to reckon with. He has lots of political capital and needs to use it against those sleazy denizens of Capitol Hill or they will stymie his agenda. There is not a minute to waste.
Paul Ryan still thinks we give a damn about what he says?
Amnesty supporter, medicare part d, bailouts, patriot act, excess budgets, increased national debt, free trade, 'immigration reform', iraq invasion, no child left behind, etc
Agreed. Ryan's judgement is on par with Cruz. Both are stuck on stupid.
