wasnt he a never-Trump?He was definitely not on the Trump Train, but this analysis of the big picture is the best I have read.
His writing is superb, and packs so much truth in a short essay. He is a treasure.

Agreed. This is the best post-mortem so far, unsurprising
coming from one of our greatest chroniclers of unfolding
history.
Having acknowledged that, I must say that he greatly
disappointed for an entire year, simply unable to see
clearly what Trump was bringing to the campaign, and
ultimately, to the Republic. I will wait for his self-analysis.

I just read this article. I don’t think it’s so great.
The ongoing analysis here, in FR, by many, many posters (and I do NOT include myself) is collectively about 3 orders of magnitude more accurate, more in-depth, more comprehensive, and more comprehensible than this piece by Hanson.

It's hard to give much credence to the analysis of a man that was unwilling to place the well being of his country ahead of maintaining his place at the GOPe trough. VDH was a #NeverTrumper long after the race came down to either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
What makes you think he's telling you what he really believes now as opposed to just trying to secure himself a place (and a paycheck) in the new political landscape?

I can make it even shorter: “It’s the Economy Stupid”.
Obama’s ideology and policies didn’t do diddly about creating real jobs for a huge portion of the Democratic Party’s base. There are still people in this country who want to work, and not depend on a handout from Uncle Sam.
