House Bill 451 will have its first hearing in the Ohio Senate on Tuesday. The bill, which would affect who decides a person on life supports fate, was drafted in response to the 2011 stabbing death of local woman, Maria Vera.
In particular, the bill would offer protections in the case that spouses were in the middle of a divorce, legal separation or dissolution. It would also take into consideration situations where the victim has a temporary or civil protection order against their family member. In that case, that family member would not be allowed to determine what happens to the victim on life support.
Vera, 22, of Norwalk, was attacked by her estranged husband, Jeremy Gallant, after they got into an argument while she was collecting belongings from his Berlin Township home in June 2011. Gallant repeatedly stabbed Vera in the face, neck and head.
She was on life support for two weeks before she died.
House Bill 451 was created in response to Veras death.
