Was the reporting before or after the Sunday cave? Comey might have figured he would be fired by Obama first if he didn’t come to heel before Tuesday. Keeping his job under Trump might have looked to him like a moot point.

The "ten-year term" refers to a term limit of ten years, not an absolute term of ten years.
The FBI Director can be fired just like any other Executive branch official.
