Same thing happened to me. Someone gave us $125 gift card to a restaurant. I figured, two dinners for Mrs. RWA and me. Well, it was a fancy place. Premium Gold Angus Beef. We thought, oh, what the heck.
After the card, the delicious meals and tip, it was another $175. It was very good, but I never would pay $300 and I never will pay $175 for two again.

Now that right there; that’s just poor etiquette. You DON’T give gift cards that will only cover 1/5th of the cost of dinner for two. Even the cheap joints offer two-for-one, so any gift card you buy should cover at least HALF. It’s one thing if you regularly drop $200+ on dinner with your wife. But if you RARELY EVER spend more than $100? No dice.
Now, it’s true that $50 is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but dear auntie still needs a tête-à-tête with Ms. Post.
