Cleveland’s Unthinking Racism(Waaaaaaaa!)
nytimes.com ^ | 10/29/2016 | David Leonhardt

For many of Cleveland’s passionate, patient baseball fans, their team’s logo is a joyful connection to the past. It’s a reminder of the players from their childhood and from generations earlier. The logo — which was the centerpiece of a 28-foot-high sign that welcomed fans to Cleveland’s old ballpark for many seasons — is one of the few constants across the decades.

But the logo is also an ugly racist caricature.

That much is undeniable, whatever else may be true. It consists of a cartoon face with bright red skin, grotesquely large teeth and a bent nose, topped by a single feather. The character is named Chief Wahoo, and the team, of course, is the Cleveland Indians.

One of the most recognizable logos in professional sports. And you'll see it nowhere on Fox's coverage. Just a block "C".

Loved Terry Francona's first postgame press conference where he wore the chief prominently displayed on his cap.

When was the last time these ultra-sensitive liberals complained about something legitimate?

Nobody has a problem with this (or the Redskins), not the least of which are the Native American tribes themselves.

A Freeper posted a week or so ago that he had seen a real Indian wearing an Indians cap with the chief on it. He wasn’t a Cleveland fan — he just liked the cap, and said it was popular on his reservation.

Before agonizing on behalf of Indians, I’d suggest asking the Indians.

As someone of Irish ancestry, I have just now decided that I’m really upset and offended because the University of Notre Dame calls its team the “Fighting Irish.” I also thing that those of you of Scandinavian ancestry should be very offended because Minnesota’s NFL team is called the “Vikings.”

Most of the sports teams with indian logos have significant fan bases in the indian community.

Apparently these SJWs are unaware that the indians were known for their fighting skills.

More “rampant snowflakes” looking for grants.

How about finding a tribe that supports the logo and and do a little capitalistic licensing agreement? I think the largest pronounceable Indian nation in Ohio was the Shawnee.

I am so bored with these holier than thou NYT/lib hacks, bemoaning the boorishness of fly over country. MYODB. Do like any normal person would do. If the Indians offend you, boycott them. Don’t buy a ticket. Don’t watch on TV. But, mind your own d... business.

The good people of Cleveland seem satisfied with the situation.

This whole “progressive” idea that self defined “smart” people have the right to tell everyone else how to live is pernicious and a threat to liberty.

After moving to Chicago, I dated a girl who was Apache. She LOVED Chief Wahoo and hearing stories of growing up an Indians fan in Cleveland. As far as I’m concerned, that’s all I need to hear.

...Her pet name for me was Chief Wahoo.

Ya-ta-Hey!!!

Love my Indian heritage and love they way it is celebrated by sports teams and schools everywhere. After all, a sports team or a school is not calling themselves Indians because they want you to believe they are a bunch of soft, frail, girlie men!!

Unfortunately, I can see a not to distant future where calling your favorite team the Girliemen will be celebrated and encouraged.

But the logo is also an ugly racist caricature.

The only people with any standing to complain about the Indians' logo are actual American Indians. Liberals who aren't American Indians have nothing to say about the matter, and I've yet to see any poll which indicates that the majority of American Indians care even a little about the Indians' logo or about the "Redskins" name.

Before agonizing on behalf of Indians, I’d suggest asking the Indians.

Ask them in which language - Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, etc?

WWGD - What Would Gandhi Do?
