I have a humidor at a certain location. the reason why Cuban cigars are at their price is not only because of their quality but because well, they’re technically banned which gives it a certain notoriety. Now I expect them to go cheap. Sigh
Your friends are wrong...they probably had Cubans that were either counterfit or purchased in the Carribean Islands.....
The good first quality Cuban cigars are only shipped to Europe....
There is a difference....
I went back the next year - bought 3. Nothing like the previous one. So counterfeit cigars or below standard exports have been going on since cigars became popular in the mid 90's.
I suspect Fidel has been keeping his premium tobacco and exporting the second rate cigars, yet charging premium. Typical commie rat.
Havana needs its very own Chuck E Cheese.
;^)
Homestead AFB no longer exists. It was wiped out by Hurricane Andrew.
“I dont smoke cigars, but people I know who do tell me that after six decades of Communism, Cuban cigars pretty much suck.”
I’ve heard the same. Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan cigars are the bomb now. I tried some top shelf Cubans in Spain and was underwhelmed.
If you really want to hurt Cuba and cause regime change, throw open the floodgates for American tourists to go as much as they want.
It’s called the fatal hug. Waves of drunken ignorant real housewives of Atlanta waving credit cards, yelping about everything, bitching to the hotel staff, asking directions to Senor Frogs. And then their shrill drunken mating call.....Woooooooohoooo!!!!
They keep wanting the restrictions lifted. They should go to cancun first and see if that’s what they want.
That’s a no to cheap Cuban cigars. There’s a waiting list that’s been around for a while for select distributors to sell these as soon as the restrictions are lifted. It costs plenty to get on the list. They won’t be as expensive as they are now, but part of the cost will be for an extra middleman.
True. I have a humidor on Vancouver and it’s pricey as hell. However, I know the prices somewhat and still get updates now and then. There will always be a middleman. I got Cohibas that cost me an arm but it was worth it 3 months ago.
Wife and I went to Cancun in 1991. Felt safe, I speak Spanish, that helped too. We went to Acapulco in 1984. Felt perfectly safe. Day trip to Taxco.
Yes, I hear these places are now cartel & drug infested & very dangerous for “gringos”. Oh well, see America first.
I know, that’s the irony. The new Bacardi distillery across the harbor from San Juan is marvelously modern, with wind turbines for power, but its distillate is still not as good as whatever antique equipment Cubans are using.
We had a lefty houseguest a couple weeks ago, an old school chum of the missus.
She had visited Cuba and said, `They may not have much but they are happy.’
That’s a common meme you know, happy campesinos living in Fidel’s socialist workers’ paradise.
I couldn’t control myself any longer so said, `That must be why Cubans in Florida climb on to those inner tubes and make that perilous 90 mile trip through shark-infested waters back to Kooba: because they want to be happy again?’
We didn’t talk politics any more after that.
And here I thought the nanny state politicians were all against smoking. Maybe this is another one of those “it’s for the children” campaigns.
“All over Oceania this morning there were irrepressible spontaneous demonstrations when workers marched out of factories and offices and paraded through the streets with banners voicing their gratitude to Big Brother for the new, happy life which his wise leadership has bestowed upon us.”
From Orwell’s “1984”
Happens all the time in Cuba, too. Can’t keep those happy campesinos down!
;^)
Nope. I do make a point to buy American on some things (cars, etc), but on many things (electronics, phones, etc) it seems damn near impossible.
In all honesty, such an action might in fact cause Cubans to demand that the embargo be reinstated.
The old folks, those who lived through the revolution are very bitter, but know well enough not to show it or say anything to strangers. Ironically, it is the younger generation, the ones that know no better, that most support Fidel.
