Wife and I went to Cancun in 1991. Felt safe, I speak Spanish, that helped too. We went to Acapulco in 1984. Felt perfectly safe. Day trip to Taxco.

Yes, I hear these places are now cartel & drug infested & very dangerous for “gringos”. Oh well, see America first.
