This may not bode well for Thailand with some of the anti-monarch activities over the past 10 years.

Expected, but it still comes as a shock. Without his steady hand on the helm through the Vietnam War Thailand could have gone down a very bad path.

This is seriously not good.

The only person that kept the place from civil war. He was seen almost as a god.

The Thai people LOVED their King. There are few things that will make them show anger in public- but insult their King and you will get an ass beating before jail (and probably on your way to jail too)

The heir apparent, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is a bit of an odd character, and not very popular. He had made Foo Foo his pet poodle an Air Marshall...and drew a salary for the dog.

Thai crown prince’s poodle, Air Chief Marshal Foo Foo, has been cremated

Thailand King’s Successor: Who Will Replace King Bhumibol When He Dies?

-excerpt-
“Although the military is the most powerful force in the Thai political arena, Thais have good reason to be concerned about the future of the throne. The monarchy retains power and legitimacy by endorsing the military’s frequent coups of elected government. King Bhumibol reigned through 17 coups throughout his 70 year career. There is widespread fear throughout Thailand that this power in the hands of the crown prince could have a drastically destabilizing effect in an already insecure political system. Many Thais are hoping for a last minute announcement from the ailing king that the crown prince’s sister, Princess Sirindhorn, who enjoys a reputation much like that of her father, will take the throne instead.”

Almost as long a reign as Louis XIV’s (1643-1715).

Very true! Sad day for most Thais, I’m sure.

While not in rule Michael I of Romania first ascended to the throne in 1927. He is the last surviving individual to have held the equivalent of Field Marshal rank in WWII.

Muslims are only 4.6% of the population and concentrated in the south on the Malay Peninsula, along the border with Malaysia.

The issue in Thailand is military control of the government (55 of the last 63 years) and suppression of political liberty. The military attempts to create stability by suppressing dissent and periodically staging coups. The late King was a unifying and revered figure above the fray. The new King is more overtly tied to the military, and much more controversial.

My relative, who died a few years back, was a career diplomat; and economic consul for his entire career with the State Department. He and his wife and children travelled extensively, and were stationed for a period of years in various countries. Thailand was one of them. They were good friends with the Royal Family, and my relative’s wife, being an excellent artist, did various portraits of the Royal Family. They loved Thailand, and the Royal Family and spoke very highly of them.
