Is US preparing preemptive strike on North Korea?

South Korea has had no discussions whatsoever with the United States about a preemptive strike on North Korea, Seoul's ambassador to Washington said.

Amb. Ahn Ho-young made the remark during a parliamentary audit of his embassy on Saturday as talk of removing North Korea's nuclear facilities through a military strike has surfaced in the U.S. in the wake of Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test.

"We've had no such discussions at least here in Washington," Ahn said during the audit held at the embassy. "We've never received a request from the U.S. government for discussions about a preemptive strike."

Last month, an independent task force report from the Council on Foreign Relations suggested that the U.S., South Korea and Japan should send a strong message to the North that future aggression will be met with a strong response, including "strikes against military targets inside North Korea."

Hardly. Obama would rather send N Korea an aid package to keep them alive and well.

This will never happen with Obama still in office.

Is this from a Middle School newspaper? What kind of journalist would do a story on something this sensitive by citing something as meaningless as a think tank study group report, and then source it on public comments by an ambassador and the White House spokesman? Good job, boys. You’ve covered all the bases. Nothing going on here. Let’s move along.

Hypothetically, if the US were to do a pre-emptive strike, how would the Chinese respond?

Scary thought.

Exactly. I cannot believe he would risk upsetting his apple cart at this point in the process.

Obama’s in China’s pocket - he’s as likely to strike at N. Korea as he is to nuke Iran...

Obama is more likely to make a preemptive strike on South Korea.

They'd put exploding batteries in all our phones.

Wag the dog = military coup time. How many Generals would chicken out when the motive is obvious? If 4 members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are given orders which one grabs the bull by the horns knowing the other 3 will turn on him?

That’ll be checkmate for us if we’re stupid enough to try.
The whole world hates us right now and it would be the last straw for a huge string of nations to converge on us like we did in Afghanistan/Iraq.

It should’ve been done by Bush. It’ll never be done by Obama. He’ll send them flowers.

An opportune moment for Obama to suspend the election and declare Martial Law.

What a ridiculous article. Don’t the South Koreans know that Bath House is gelded, and besides she would not attack a fellow-traveler anyway?

And what threat does Korea pose to the US?

Sure, South Korea and Japan could be hurt pretty badly, but there is not a single reason that makes sense for US to attack them.

The army and navy are at Pre WWII levels. There is no treasury available to spend on another war. After years of kids coming home without arms and legs, and with traumatic brain injuries, the US people would not support another full scale war.

Imagine the losses in Korea. In the first Korean war the country experienced losses about equal to the Viet Nam War in 1/3 of the time. Our citizens are not ready or prepared for that.

Imagine loosing a Carrier group to a Chinese bomb or swarm of hypersonic missiles. Do you think we would suck up 5,000 sailors lost in a day?

We could wipe North Korea off the peninsula in about ten minutes.

So, what would the rationale be for US starting by attacking them with little to no prelude?

Ok, let’s play the meme out. Under what pretense will martial law be imposed, where will it be imposed, and who will enforce it? There are not enough LEOs local, state and federal to enforce it and the military may be a bit busy if we’re nuking the Norks and China retaliates. I’ve seen this meme over and over from back in the Clinton days, through Bush, and it’s simply not plausible. Localized area for shot period of time during a disaster, yes...and that’s even dicey, but nationwide martial law? Not going to happen, IMHO.
