The commuter train that crashed into New Jersey Transit's Hoboken terminal during the Thursday morning rush was not equipped with the positive train control technology that could have prevented it from roaring off the rails.
What's more, not a single New Jersey Transit employee has been trained how to use the PTC technology, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Transportation progress report, which is dated Sept. 13.
The agency has a Dec. 31, 2018 deadline for putting this technology in place. The report states that "NJT has had a contractor on board for several years." The report also says NJT has done "partial testing over the course of the past year" on a locomotive and a cab car.
The absence of PTC, which automatically slows down trains when they exceed the speed limit on a stretch of track, was blamed by the National Transportation Safety Board for the 2015 derailment of an Amtrak train in Philadelphia that left eight people dead.

What I mean is, that if sick, he could hold the button even when it was not appropriate.
It sounds almost like an ADVISORY system if there is training involved. Actual PTC means the train simply won’t go over the programmed speed limit, or in some cases simply won’t go at all, unless the train knows through the PTC system that it is okay to proceed or go that fast.
No okay to proceed, the train refuses, no matter what the engineer tries to do.
It is pretty strange that NJ transit had this sort of system (apparently since 2002?) and that train did not have the gear and ‘no one was trained’. Of course that is long enough that perhaps they phased it out as obsolete and then did not replace it? Still strange.
Somebody upstairs was looking out for you. Glad you’re okay. Thank you Lord.
I go with something worse than dereliction. Worse is precisely what we are seeing nation wide on a daily basis. Somewhere in the twisted wreckage is a twisted jihadist.
Not really for those working in NYC, Manhattan in particular. Express busses, Metro-North, LIRR, ferries, often to link up to subway or surface transit (city busses) and extended walks are the way people get to and from work in NYC. Even once in the subway system, transfering between lines to reach different areas within one county or different counties is part and parcel of life in Fun City.
Ferries were the only transportation into Manhattan from the west for 400 years.
I live in Rome, NY. Utica is a hazardous waste, Rome runs a close second. Cuomo is spending 8.5 million on a new roundabout within the old Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. There’s a business park there now, but for the life of me, I don’t see why there needs to be a roundabout. Sounds like pork barrel spending to me.
Nobody was trained... that sounds kind of odd to me, but again I am only familiar with one PTC system and that’s the one being rolled out now.
I haven’t looked at the train side of the system, but if it really IS set up so that PTC needs the engineer’s permission to work, then I would wonder what’s the point.
Agreed.
How come other trains and instances of this one have been just fine?
Why are they not talking about the ENGINEER? something sounds very strange that they are not reporting on his condition. Just watching a TV broadcast and one lady said she was praying it was a medical condition and nothing more?
I would think they know by know if he was deceased or if there was something more?
Do you think they had cameras in his cabin? I would think so. Hopefully we get answers.
If I had to guess they’re going with an Amtrak-style system, which is what other people we know are working on not the sort I work with. Probably the transponders aren’t compatible. If they had to rip out the old system before putting in the new - or even just didn’t budget to maintain the old system, or buy new parts for it, I could see this. Kinda.
I’m so close, and yet so far. I don’t know everything that has been set up in trains. I recall that camera coverage of crews has been discussed but it’s not part of PTC, it would be a different safety measure.
Sounds like he might have just gone catatonic, or croaked even, leaning on the button, and so the train just charged into the station at full speed. That had better not be sufficient override, or even PTC is scrod.
or Terrorism? Skilled Engineer’s do not make major mistakes unless something happened.
William Blaine, another train engineer who witnessed the crash, told NBC New York that he was with authorities when they found the engineer slumped over in his chair. He says he believes the engineer died, but there has been no official confirmation from authorities

They made this announcment already? That sounds insane, absolute bulls***.
Would he have died thus from the shock of the impact? Doing this on purpose?
That was for the 2015 Philly accident in response to the PTC issue.
I clearly remember that and IIRC the fag conductor was let off easy.
