The commuter train that crashed into New Jersey Transit's Hoboken terminal during the Thursday morning rush was not equipped with the positive train control technology that could have prevented it from roaring off the rails.
What's more, not a single New Jersey Transit employee has been trained how to use the PTC technology, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Transportation progress report, which is dated Sept. 13.
The agency has a Dec. 31, 2018 deadline for putting this technology in place. The report states that "NJT has had a contractor on board for several years." The report also says NJT has done "partial testing over the course of the past year" on a locomotive and a cab car.
The absence of PTC, which automatically slows down trains when they exceed the speed limit on a stretch of track, was blamed by the National Transportation Safety Board for the 2015 derailment of an Amtrak train in Philadelphia that left eight people dead.

I worked on PTC for NJ Transit for lines into Hoboken. It went into revenue service 11 years. Did they yank it out?
What happen to the engineer? The said the found him slumped over, did the train not brake at all? Was he Dead because of the accident or before the accident? Are the engineers by themselves? Not wanting to think it was more than an accident but it does make one think about terrorism? No attempt to stop? had he had a heart attach or a stroke and died before the accident?
Again was it Terrorism?
Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to watch the CBS Evening News every night during the week of the Philly train crash. They repeatedly blamed the crash on Republicans refusal to fund infrastructure.
The train DID have “positive” train control: a highly paid union engineer sitting behind the controls. Sad that the technology was not present to protect the riders from the engineer. Tragic even. But it was an accident sans-technology that did not need to happen.
A perusal of PATH’s budget might prove interesting. How much was spent on out-of-state trips? How much spent on art and on renovations of offices? What budget choices did the governing body make that did not prioritize PTC?
Simple question. Was the engineer of that train impaired, suicidal or overcome by people who had bad intentions? When will these key questions be addressed? That locomotive was under the control of a person.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Islam which is a religion of peace.
WTF this was scrolled on a TV Station? No Source of where it came from? Wow!
This is video of a civil alert yesterday from a WKTV Channel 2 Utica, NY.
They later posted on their twitter feed to ignore the alert.
That does sound odd if the system was operative that long ago, unless it became unmaintainable or something like that (and so, was effectually ripped out). Was this a proprietary system? The one rolling out now is an open standards system.
I’m seeing 1 dead, 100 injured (earlier it was 3 dead). Hope it’s 1
Redneck, you’re knowledge of PTC and this post needs to be the story—if the talking heads try to make the story about Chris Christie, Trump’s ally, which is how they will create the narrative.
I believe the PATH service is run by the Port of NY Authority, a bi state agency. What that has to do with the GOP seems at best tangential.
Oh, man! Glad for you, but what thoughts you must be having. Praying for you!
They say one dead and an article said they found the engineer slumped over in the train. They presume DEAD. So that makes two? Why are they not reporting this?
Seems very strange. Especially since he was in the impact zone?
I’ve been looking at the news and online of aerial views of the Hoboken station.
To me it looks like the end of a run. Where do commuters go afterwards to proceed into NYC?
TIA

Biker Joe might know more about past history... it sounded like a system was put in earlier, but maybe they had problems keeping it working. And it might not be compatible with the current system being rolled out.
The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that the derailment was caused by the train’s engineer becoming distracted by other radio transmissions and losing situational awareness.
When you run off the Dagny Taggerts...
Here is the Facebook post WKTV released after the emergency alert.
