Obama-era surveillance worse than Stasi, says Oliver Stone

US film director Oliver Stone on Thursday accused President Barack Obama's administration of implementing a surveillance system worse than that of the feared Stasi secret police in East Germany.

Speaking at the San Sebastian film festival in northern Spain, where he presented his film "Snowden," Stone said many in the US had grown disillusioned with a president they once saw as "a man of great integrity."

"On the contrary, Obama has doubled down on the (George W.) Bush administration policies," said Stone, whose latest movie is a biographical political thriller about Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who revealed a vast US surveillance programme in 2013.

Just saw "Snowden" at the movie theater. Best film Stone has ever done. They really capture the culture of the Intelligence Community.

Obama-era surveillance worse than Stasi, says Oliver Stone

I've said this before. Since 9/11, surveillance of US citizens by their own government has become something Erich Honecker could only have dreamed of. For once, I find myself agreeing with Stone.

The Stasi never had the convenience of 99% of the population willingly carrying tracking-devices around with them.

Good to hear. I'll have to check it out. I was just talking to a buddy who's former military intel (high level) and an ex-FBI intel analyst. Supposed to give him a shout tomorrow. I'll let him know about the movie; he's into that type of thing. It does make for a better story when those who have lived it know it's portrayed accurately instead of the ridiculous Mission Impossible movies....

Its not even close. In its 40 year existence, the Stasi collected between 900 million and a billion pages of information.
The NSA collects that amount roughly every 2 days.

I believe Snowden said all phone calls are recorded (IIRC); he also said we’re like “tagged birds” - and he’s right. If Snowden had exposed the Bush administration with this he would be hailed as a hero by the left; because it was on Obama’s watch he is vilified.

What the Stasi did have were thousands of compromised East Germans who informed on their neighbors to save their own hides. Crude but very effective.

The closest we come to that here are 1-800-SNITCH hotlines used against one’s gun owner neighbor with whom one nurses a grudge.

Along with nosy doctors asking “Do you own a gun and, have you experienced suicidal tendencies?”

Oliver Stone doesn’t know his @zz from a hole in the ground, as usual.

Walk into the Verizon cell phone store at your local mall. Tell the clerk the Snowden movie says Verizon lets Government listen in on all Verzon phone calls.

Discuss that with their customers.

As you turn to exit, flip them the big bird.
Leave them a loud vocal FU Verizon.

Has Mr. Stoned said if he voted for Obama once or twice?

I think he’s right about that, and if Mrs. Clinton is elected I suspect that spying on disfavored Americans will become a routine occurrence.

What's more, the Freedom of Information Act no longer has any merit, Mrs. Clinton has schlonged any respect for law. No more threat of impeachment for any actions either.

If Mr. Stoned cannot adamantly say that this woman would abuse the powers of her office with no expectations of challenge or investigation, then he needs to just stop milking the masses for ticket money and go find an honest profession.

What does that have to do with anything? Luckily, I don’t have to call you a fool, because that would be wrong for me to do, and you seem to have self identified as one. ;-)

I loved the movie but I thought they cast the intel types as pretty right-wingy and....that’s not correct, at least not in the past 10 years, or so.

The only really huge scoff I had was the notion that he would INFORM his two colleagues of his impending plans, the black guy and the Jewish guy.

I really, really, really think he didn’t confide his plans to ANYONE other than to Poitras and Greenwald.

I was surprised and relieved Oliver Stone didn’t dwell on Greenwald’s being gay.

If the movie was really loyal to reality then I think it’s silly that Snowden was shocked by what he’d witness in Switzerland —pretty tame stuff, IMO.
