[Alberta's Child]

I have to admit that I always had a soft spot in my heart for the Nation of Islam after reading an account of the bedlam at the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago a few decades ago. The place was so bad that the Chicago police wouldn't even respond to calls there, so it had descended (literally) into a stone age zoo.

The city government signed a contract with a security firm run by the Nation of Islam, and they were so effective at dealing with the criminal element that the Chicago police eventually DID come back -- to respond to calls from criminals who were mistreated by the security guards.

One incident described in the article involved a mutant who was caught breaking into the apartment of some 90 year-old woman. When the police arrived, the guy was nowhere to be seen. They got a few tips from the residents, and went down into the basement to find that the guy had been stripped naked and was being flogged with whips by the security guards.

I still crack up over that. They sound like my kind of people.

Great story... Shows that the Nation of Islam is a faction in America who care about the larger community.
